JFF (And Curious) - Pledge of Allegiance

On this 4th of July holiday, I was just wondering - do your kids still stay the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag in their school? Or has their school done away with it?

I am happy to say that where DD will be attending school (kindergarten) in the fall, they still do. But it is also a private Catholic school, so the "under God" part is still included, as well as The Lord's Prayer and a short bible lesson. Not sure about the public school where we live - if they took "under God" out, or if they even say it at all.

Happy 4th everyone!

Yes they do and it's a public (California) school!
They also have a Monday morning flag salute :)
I think most schools still do. The silly news heads like to focus on those who don't, but all the districts around here do it.
Happy Independence Day!!!

We homeschool but we say it. We say it every Friday and we sing My Country 'Tis of Thee afterward. We only do it on Fri. because they're only in K and 1st grades. In 2nd grade we will do it every morning (5days).

We do other songs and verses as well, but they're centered around the season, etc.

My daughter's school lets the teachers decide how often to do the pledge. She skips the "under god" part. My family includes atheists/agnostics, pagans, Muslims, and "other". I agree with Kris that the "under god" addition is divisive and is unnecessary in a pledge to our country's flag as our country stand for both freedom of and freedom from religion.

They say it at my son's public school every Monday. We (and he) just skip the God part, but most kids say it. It was not originally in there and I think it is a divisive addition.

I work in a public middle school, and every day (usually second period), they do the Pledge of Allegiance AND the Pledge to the Texas flag (yeah.. a Texas thing..). They then have a moment of silence, and announcements.

All students are expected to stand up for the pledge, and stand for the moment of silence. They don't have to say the pledge, but they do have to stand respectfully.

And... the "Under God" part IS in the pledge.... and it is also in the Pledge to the Texas Flag...

I teach high school in Texas, and the students say the Pledge of Allegiance every day (with the God part). If they choose not to say it, that's fine, but they are asked to stand and be respectful. I am glad we say the pledge.

They also say the Texas Pledge every day which bugs me to no end. I stand up for it to be respectful, but I don't say it. I am a proud Texan; I was born here, and Texans are taught from birth to be insanely proud, but I see no need to say a pledge to our state every day. It wastes time that I could be using to teach.

Yep, they still do at our public schools. And at graduations, *everyone* stands up, sings The Star Spangled Banner and recites the pledge.

I honestly have no idea if my kids schools say it or not. I'd have to ask them LOL I don't say the "under god" part because it wasn't part of the original pledge and I don't believe there is a "god". so I just skip that part. Depends on how much I'm hurting whether I'll stand or not.

I wish ours did. We still have teachers that will say it and if a child chooses not to that is their choice. I love to hear it. I wish all schools would say it. This is a reminder of who we are and what we stand for. IMO

My daughter still says it in school and they still say 'under God'. Which hubby and I are very happy about! We are in a very small Iowa town, so I can't see it changing!

The full pledge is recited in public schools in Massachusetts everyday. The meaning of each part of the pledge is also studied as part of the state's curriculum.

I work at a public high school/Jr high (7-12) and the whole school says it every morning. The 9-12 ASB Pres comes on over the PA right after the first bell to prompt it. And it includes the "under God" part.

i think the local schools still do it, and include the new-fangled addition<G>. they did when my boys went there, and it's such a conservative slice of the state, i'm sure i'd have heard the ruckus if The Words had been left out.
i had no issue with my boys saying the pledge. i told them they could say it like the rest, change it to 'under the gods' or leave it out. i'm pretty sure they just went along with the crowd.
it doesn't make sense to shoehorn it into a pluralistic society. but i've got bigger fish to fry.
