JFF - Do You Do the Butt Sniff in Public?

I usually feel first, but then sometimes sniff. I have seen Mom's stick their finger in their baby's diaper and come out with a finger full. Disgusting... yuk yuck yuck

Yup...It's been a while since my kids are 8 and 5. But, I just had a baby a couple of weeks ago and find myself butt-sniffin' once again. i thought everyone did it!

Yep I do :) Now that my son is 2 and not wearing onsies anymore, I do more of the peak down the pants....but when he was in his onsies, I totally did the butt sniff :) anywhere anytime. HA! Sometimes, I found it wasn't him just by sniffing --saved us needless trips to the baby changing station!

this reminds me of a story I once heard. A mom says to her toddler, did you poop, he says no... moments later, she says are you sure you didn't poop? he says, no mamma.... then she says, I smell something, are you sure you didn't poop?? at which time, the little boy drops his pants and proceeds to show his mom his butt cheeks and says NO MAMMA, LOOK, JUST FARTS...

I just thought this was funny and your question reminded me of it ..
also.. I didn't smell for poop in as much as look into his diaper..

How else are you supposed to know, especially when they wear onesies? I'm sure not sticking my finger in there!

And why is it that the Mamas always smell it first? Lol!

Well after 3 kiddos & one still in diapers I guess I just don't notice it anymore,but yes of course hate to stick my finger in the there just incase there was poop.

Yep. And I've never gotten a weird look for it! Sometimes other mothers even smile in a way that says, "I've been there."

Sure! Daughter, grandson, and the occasional baby in my care. I can get a lot of information that way without touching anything or trying to peek inside layers of clothing.

lol! yes i have done it too. i even do it to my 2 baby nephews if i think they need to be changed.

Lol. I have done it. Not only have I done it but if I am not sure I have put His butt to hubby for him to sniff also for a second opinion!

LMAO! Yup, guilty! I've done in many many times when my daughter was younger.

All 3 of mine have been subjected to the sniff test on a regular basis. My husband does it to them as well. Sometimes it's the only way to know if it's them. I can't always do the look and see approach due to clothing and if it's tucked down a bit it's hard to see anyway.

Once I did the butt sniff and was caught by an older gentleman who looked horrified... but his wife laughed.

I've also done the "down the diaper" check in public.

that is hysterical! lol...no i don't know that i ever did it, i did the leg check. yes, even if he had long clothes on, i would unsnap to check. but i never did the sniff in private, either. too many false alarms, if you know what i mean - i wanted visual proof! LOL!

that and do the move where I sorta stick my finger in and see if it feels clean--which is really gross!

All the time! My husband is always grossed out too, he also says nobody else does it but me!..lol

Not just the butt sniff-the pull out the back of the diaper move to see if there's any baby fudge.

So I totally do. My family laughs at me so much for it. Not because It's gross, but because I'm always worried about my sons poop. He was either chronically constipated or had diarrhea non stop. It was so bad I either had to help my son go poop or I was usually covered in it. So needless to say it was always on my mind. So yeah I most certainly do sniff for poop. But no fear about my son we got him straightened out.

Of course, who doesn't?

Yes, and I have been known to give the um... crotch a quick tap to see if he's wet under all the winter clothes!

I used to. Now that she is 22 months, I can just grab her butt through the diaper and feel it.

I know I did, especially if they had something on that I couldn't look to see.

i do it. we were at disney on ice a couple weeks ago and were sitting beside a family with a child about 6 months older then my daughter and his mom did the butt sniff and my daughter was sitting on her dads lap and she farted and he thought she pooped so i smelt her and she STUNK but it was about over so i waited and i thought she pooped so i went to change her but there was nothing in there

If he's wearing shorts or elastic pants, I can just peek down the diaper. But I'm not pulling pants off and peeking under a onesie, that's too much trouble. Just a quick "lift and sniff", followed by a kiss if he's clean, lol. I don't know why that'd be gross, it's not like I'm putting my nose in an open diaper, lol, but through a diaper and layer of clothes. Whatever. It's not like a baby's cry, where you know his distinct cry (and what each cry means).......it's just "hmm, I smell something, could it be?"
Ask hubby to figure it out whichever way he thinks is right next time. :)

I have done it many, many times in the past. My mother cannot will actually open of there pants leg snaps and pull out the diaper and look in it. This was usually in church of all places and I must say I was embarrassed. I never went that far unless I had already taken them out to change them and found that they must have just let gas and then I was a little more discrete about it than my mom was. My aunt also actually looks in the diaper, but she has some serious sinus issues and has not been about to smell even the strongest of odors for years.

i just opened the top of my dd's pants and got a visual, or i would gently spread her legs a bit, and crack the diaper open so i could see that way.......i never "sniffed"

Yup. I'm pretty sure people can figure out what I'm doing. It's pretty obvious...

I used to do it to my kids (and so did my husband, and my mom, and my sister) but now that they're older it's just my baby nephew who is occassionally subjected to the butt sniff. I can't even really figure out why that would be weird in public honestly. Don't some babies make grown-man-type funky smells & doesn't everyone within sniffing distance want that taken care of ASAP?? Ha!

yup! It's easier to sniff test than to try and maneuver to look sometimes. Plus, I've gone to look by pulling out the back of the diaper and *felt* that the diaper needed to be changed. Sniffing is the lesser of 2 evils there for sure!! LOL

I have never, ever done that. You can squeeze it and tell if there is something in there! =)

yeah, i would rather get weird looks then my son have a diaper rash because he didnt get change right away (he has really sensitve skin)
