JFF: How Hilarious Is Match.com? OMG...

A funny story for your Friday...so my husband and I are separated and inching very slowly towards divorce. A friend who is dating asked me if he was on Match.com because she thought she got a match that could have been him. I was curious and tried to go on and see if I could find him (juvenile, I know, but curiosity is my Kryptonite). Well apparently while "it's free to look" you have to create a profile first. It was such a pain that I quit before really finding anything but to get even to whatever point I abandoned ship, I did have to give some info. I think I gave an e-mail address, that I was looking for men, a geographic area, an age range, and 200 characters of random letters (ajhjhafjdhalkueyrjadfjbfajklkauhfauef etc.) as my profile, no photo, no activities, no other info. Clearly not revealing anything about myself of inviting someone to get to know me.

So based on that...I'm getting match requests LOL! My inbox is filling with e-mails like "you got his attention!" and "he wants to know what you look like, upload a photo!" Seriously? How discerning is the guy who finds a profile with literally no info and why would anyone pursue that? Perhaps the "cast a wide net and hope you get something" approach?

Needless to say I'm deactivating my account as I am a long time away from being ready to date and this was just an unsuccessful fishing expedition on my part but it did amuse me for a couple of days.

Just to be clear I'm not knocking online dating or match (I have been to 3 weddings where the couples met on match and all are happy marriages), just think it's funny that even a blank profile can generate interest.

So for the question...have you ever used online dating? Any good stories to share?

What can I do next?

I did something similar to what you did (vague post, not attempting to spy on an ex) on Plenty-of-Fish and got several replies, one of which was a marriage proposal.

omg, that's so ridiculous! how desperate do they have to be?
i wonder if it's just match-generated to try and lure you in. surely no real person would be interested in algjgg[lglglltnenntngngtntntntnnggggg would they?
i've got one good friend who has been happily married for years now from match. she spent a lot- several hundred- for introductions for a couple of years, none of which seemed to work out. i was pretty worried about her. but clearly she knew what she was about.
got a family member who, to my amusement and dismay, continually touts what a great thing dating sites are but almost never gets to the 2nd date. this person is super good-looking and charming so the in-box is always full, but the excuses about the 'best matches' are endless and inventive.
i guess like most things they are what you make of 'em.
i much prefer my method back in Days of Yore- meet men in bars.

My daughter joined eharmony in November. She has had a few dates but nothing serious. Most of her friends are married so meeting a nice single guy hasn't been easy. This sounds like it was computer generated to get you back onto their system.

It's probably the computer generating people in your area to get you started by replying. Or there are some very shallow people out there (probably both).

I tried on line dating back when it was new and didn't like it. Too much exaggerating in their bio's and some very old pictures. I broke my own rule about not dating anyone I worked with when I met my husband and I am so glad I did. :-)

That's funny!!!

I thought you were going to say your separated-husband and you matched up. That would have been too much!

My friend met her ex on a site like that. Lovely guy and she's a lovely girl. Couldn't have been more ill suited though - but they went out for years. Bought a house, etc. I wondered at the time if they match people up based on similarities or if compatible, or how it works. My husband balances me out so I had hoped that for them. Not so in their case unfortunately.

I actually did this quite a bit and had great success. The main men I went out with were quite successful but had kids and crazy schedules, as did I. I found it too hard to make plans and get together so ultimately I deleted all accounts and the next weekend I met my now husband via a mutual friend. lol

It was probably good for you not to see what your soon to be ex is up to. No good can come of that and what you don't know won't hurt you...so don't go looking for anything that will just add to your stress. It's pretty much common knowledge that most men, given the opportunity, are hot doggin around pretty quick after a split up. We don't really need to see proof of it. IMHO. Good luck.

When I was in grad school my roommate and I used to look at dating sites during our study breaks. It was a hoot! After grad school I moved to a medium sized town that had zero social life except for the bars. Not my style. One boring weekend I took a look at a local singles site and had to create a profile in order to see profiles. I put in very general info about myself. No way you could tell anything about me. I had a few men contact me. That's how I met my husband. We will celebrate our 10th anniversary in March.

I was telling my husband how good he has it with me and jokingly joined match.com to show him how lucky he is. (Bad I know) I really only remembering giving my email address. For years now I get a daily update of matches in my area...they are all woman!😬😆😉. To unsubscribe you have to send them a letter. I couldn't do it online so everyday I just have to trash the email. Annoying!!! The joke was apparently on me!

I've had some friends use it with a lot of success but I do have a funny story. My cousin tried online dating for a stretch. She was matched with a guy who had a very peculiar profile picture. In the background of his picture, there was an open grave. He clearly posted a picture from a funeral!

I have game friends on fb. No chatting, no contact other than just playing the same game on fb. I had 1 guy tell me I looked beautiful in my profile pic. The pic shows the top of my head, no face, no part of my body other than an arm while I'm playing with my dog. Hysterical. Unfriended and blocked.

One of my brothers met a girl online. She's from another country. He visited her, she vacationed here, back a forth a couple times. He ended up moving to her country, they have a child together, and so far they've lived happily ever after.

I have never used online dating but I've noticed something on Facebook. I often have my profile picture as something other than myself. My cat, a cartoon, etc. When I use a photo of myself I get friend requests from random men. I don't do sexy sefie type photos, think more along the lines of a school picture headshot with nothing interesting about it.

At least there is a reasonable assumption that a profile on a dating site means the person is open to meeting people. There is no such intended purpose on FB. Sometimes I want to ask why they think it is a good idea hit up random women based on absolutely nothing at all, but that would require opening a line of communication and that's a Nope.
