Get her spayed. That's really it. And until then, keep her inside - otherwise she will get pregnant at the first opportunity.
This will be my first experience with a kitty in heat. Is there anything we can do to make it better for her? Do we need to do anything for her? We always get our animals fixed, but she showed up on our doorstep and we have not had the money to get her fixed yet.

Keep her inside... which will be tough because she will try and run every time you open the door. Also, there are a lot of low-cost spay clinics out there, so call around and get her spayed asap.

You'll need patience. Lots of it. Yowl! Yowl! Yowl! Lol. So annoying! Don't think there's anything to do about it but get her fixed.
The issue with cats are they can go through heat cycles on an off for months on end. Heat cycles are initiated through hormones and only end when the hormones disappear (different from dogs in that aspect that actually cycle off) In order for the hormones to disappear they have to be spayed or they have to get pregnant. I had a cat that went through a heat cycle every 3 weeks until we had her spayed. You definitely need to consider SPCA or low cost spay/neuter clinics to get her spayed soon. She will want to prowl so keep her indoors to avoid risk of making little kitties and good luck! There isn't a great way to help her or make it easier for her. She will be needy, clingly, and most will "talk" incessantly.
My sister just went through this. She said thought the kitty was hurt, it was moaning so loud. She had to have her spayed. I dont think there is anything you can do until you get the money.
We went through that once. We had 2 bathrooms, and put her in one with everything she needed (food, water, soft place to sleep, litter box) and tried to ignore the yowling for a few days.
Keep her inside. Do not let her out.
When this cycle is over, bring her to a vet and ask them to spay her at a discount. I bet they will.

If you need a low fee for spay go to Heartland SPCA in Mission or go to their website and I believe they list several low cost locations that you can have this done at. You can spay her now and save you the agony of listening to her. She could be in heat for over a week so be prepared. Also as a few said below, don't let her outside as she could find a mate and then you will have kittens on your hands. Good luck!!!
You can take her to the vet and have her fixed now! Talk to your vet and work out a payment plan or find a rescue organization who will spay for a very low cost (or sometimes even free).
