Lawn Advice!

Something seems to be digging up our lawn so it looks like someone has been practicing golf or football on it.
It seems to happen at night and there are lumps of earth and turf about 6 inches across dug up. What can we do to stop having the worst lawn in the neighborhood?
I'm fairly certain it's not rabbits or moles as the digging does not look right - no tunnels and the holes are made from above not below...... HELP!

What can I do next?

Does it look like the grass pulls up like a toupee? If yes-then it is grubs. I hear you can put a small bucket or dish with about one inch of beer on your lawn, and it should attrack the grubs to the bucket, where they drown. It is sad- as I am a lover of all animals, big and small, but they can destroy lawns. I also found that in the spring, just replace the patches with the seed/mulch mix and you should be back to good!

Skunks will dig like that looking for grubs. Yuck.

I have witnessed squirrels tearing up our lawn. They are digging for the grass and roots for their nest. It looks like someone with cleats tore it up. It doesn't help that we have an oak tree in our yard either, they are making a mess digging up the acorns and leaving the "hats" everywhere.

I don't have a solution, but maybe knowing if it is squirrels, it can help you in some way.
Good luck.

Sounds like a skunk problem...we had that for awhile too. Looks like holes everywhere?? Big divots of grass where they dig for bugs. Not sure how to get rid of them, other than pesticides to eliminate their food.

We had the same problem and it was skunks digging. We were told to put moth balls all over the area. About a large size box will do. It worked! Skunks were gone and lawn started to grow back.

It's either skunks or raccoons (or both). They are after grubs in the lawn. The beer trick is for slugs, not grubs.

if it has just started...it's probably squirrels...they are digging up everything that they hid over the summer...there isn't much you can do about them..unless you have a dog to scare them off, thats we did. If its been going on forever...i'm thinking skunks... i haven't had that problem...maybe try contacting a pest control place. GOOD LUCK!

Hi V.,

Just a thought...
If you have grubs in your lawn, the skunks dig them up at night.
Pay attn. if you notice skunk odors. ( Not they they actually have sprayed, but just their presence leaves an odor sometimes.)
If it this problem, treating your lawn with grub killer will do the trick.

Good Luck,

C.
