How high was your child's level? 10? 50? Is the doctor recommending medical treatment, including hospitalization, or just identifying and eliminating the source of the lead and then restesting?

Sometimes flaking paint can leave dust on toys that the child injests, so it may not be that actual paint chips are evident and being eaten. If you rent, the landlord is responsible for addressing the problem. If you live in the city, you can call the City of Chicago and they will send an inspector who will test for lead and tell the landlord, or you if you own, what has to be done. I suspect the suburbs must have similar requirements. If you have a situation where the landlord was aware of the problem and did nothing, then you do need a lawyer.

I'm not sure why you need an attorney, but I think the first thing to do would be figure out the source of the lead. It could be old paint in your home, on your furniture, paint chips somewhere around, old pipes in your home, lead in the water (do you have a well?), etc. There are many potential sources. Please do post any specific questions you have.

Courtney is right. Definitely find the source. Your toddler may be EATING the flakes/chips of paint. This IS serious. Children have died from this. Get on it immediately.
As I recall there also may be something missing in their diet, for them to be drawn to this. Apparently it also has a sweet taste for some reason. By the way, toddlers are watched constantly, if not confined to a certain child safe area. Who is taking care of him/her? You would only need an attorney if you are renting and the landlord was negligent.....and, of course if there were serious harm to anyone.

B.,
Aside from the suggestions you have already gotten, I would suggest checking into any childcare that you use, and also checking your water. We have a community well, and a few months ago got a notice that they found lead in the water. We don't drink the tap water anyway, but I suspect this is a common source of lead. Good luck to you and your little one!
