Sorry - but when one takes a TKD or Karate test and passes it? The belt is handed out in the ceremony at the end of the testing.

The Black Belt in TKD - is usually presented with their name sewn in the back. These are ordered prior to the test as they typically do NOT allow someone to take the exam unless they are qualified and know they will pass the exam.

If this is for TKD and it is associated with the Korean Federation of TKD - the black belt identification card takes several months to get back.

Call the DoJung and find out what happened to the belt.

Is he still going to classes there? Typically there is a belt presentation ceremony in the class right after the belt testing.

I would just keep following up. Keep a record of who you spoke with so that you can say, "I called on x date and talked with so-and-so, and I also called on this date and talked with this-guy, and I'd like to know how we get the black belt for my brother". That way they will know that you mean business.

Now, sometimes just advancing a belt level doesn't get you the belt if you quit taking classes.... could that be it? If he is still enrolled I'm not sure why he isn't given the belt at class.

Call back and check up on it.
Calling about once a week is enough to remind them you haven't forgotten about it.

Our local Karate dojo does not allow anyone to test for black belt until they are at least 16 years old. The reason is that anyone under the age of 16 could not have the maturity required to have a black belt. They may have the physical skills, but there is more to being a black belt than the physical skills.

I'd call once a week and ask if the belt has been delivered to the sensei yet.

Is he still working with the dojo? If he doesn't get it by the end of the summer, perhaps he needs to find another dojo to work with.

At my daughter's Dojo, the Sensei brings it to class.
And if the student passes the test, they get it. At the ceremony as the other poster said.

Did you pay for it already?
Or it is a part of the tuition?

My nephew earned his about 2 months ago in Tae Kwon Do, the new uniform was ordered and it came with it last week. Master kept telling him it was coming (he's still going to classes to get to the next level) and it did. Have your mom give him a call, maybe it was sent and got lost. A reminder won't hurt in any event.

My friend's 11 year old just passed his black belt test. The testing took several days -- besides forms and fighting, he had a written test, an oral test, and a couple other things he had to do. He received a temporary black belt so that he can now assist teaching in the dojo, but it takes a while to receive the official black belt because they embroider the name on the belt and it has to be ordered. Some dojos order in advance, some do not. His award ceremony won't be until August even though he passed it two weeks ago. Be patient and call again.

Reading through these answers and having studied in two different dojos myself, I can tell you, every dojo works differently and although there are certain standards that must be met, there is a ton of variation in how different senseis structure their programs.
