My now one year old has been using the neb since he was four months old. He was recently hospitalized for pnuemonia, and now has to use the nebulizer more often than before. My kids father spoke to his aunt who says that the nebulizer will eventually cause holes in the baby's lungs. So now whenever I put my son on the nebulizer he has a fit and says that im killing the baby! I need some sane advice please!!

What can I do next?

That is a question for your doctor. Now having said that - my oldest son has used and still uses a nebulizer when needed. No doctors we have seen - pediatrician (2 different ones) and allergy/asthma specialists have EVER said that. The nebulizer has actually saved my son's life during high allergy/asthma seasons and has prevented so many hospitalizations. And in all the research I have done on this - that has NEVER been a side effect.

I'd definitely ask a doctor, but I have never heard of such side effects. Plus, right now using that nebulizer could be saving his life! My son never liked it either. When he no longer needs it, don't use it, but until then I don't think you have a choice! My son hasn't used his in quite a while now - but we have it just in case!

Is the aunt a pulmonologist? If not, why would your partner ask her advice or believe it? Your baby is under a doctor's care, correct? All medications have side effects, speak with your doctor to discuss what possible risks there are to the nebulizer drugs that your baby is on. I don't think your partner understands your baby's health situation and perhaps he could come along for a consultation with the doctor. If he is not there to hear the medical explanations, he has no information to go by. Please be sure that the doctor knows dad's concerns.

Ok I've had asthma for 26 yrs and I can assure you that I do not have holes in my lungs. My son and grandsons also do have have holes in their lungs.

Your kid's father needs to speak with a doctor instead of his crazy aunt. Does he have a basic understanding of asthma? How you can't get air into the lungs because you can't exhale to get the air already there (with the oxygen removed) out? No air movement = no oxygen = death. It's as plain and simple as that.

Explain that yes your son needs the nebulizer more right now because he is recovering from pnuemonia which is a disease that puts fluid in the lungs. Infected fluid takes up room that is needed for oxygen exchange. Add in the asthma which effects the function of the lungs and it would be a disaster if he didn't use the nebulizer.

Hugs to you and hope your son feels better soon. What a frightening thing to have to go through. It's a shame that you are getting stupidity instead of support.

That is NOT true. And no offense to your husband or his aunt but it's also one of the stupidest things I've ever heard. I am a nurse in an Allergy/Asthma office. I do this every day from babies-adults. The only way to make a hole in your lung is by take a foreign object and stabbing it into your lung (ie - knife, gun etc...) Or cancer. But even with cancer it's a rarity.

Hi Frances:

It is always best to research any medicine or wellness options thoroughly, this will assist awareness of what you are using, for yourself and baby. If you are in search of other options to assist your son's respiratory health, I would say research natural healthcare options, such as Aromatherapy and Homeopathy, and, together with your children's father, decide if this is a healthy route. Work together as a team to make the healthiest choice for your son's health.

All the best,

I have a girl relative that used a nebulizer until she was about 8 or 9. Now she is going on 17. Since the time she stopped using the neb, she has been in gymnastics, dance, track, tennis, crewing (team rowing), & has been completely healthy. I think you should get your info from a qualified doctor, not a releative who thinks she knows everything.
