Hi all,
I need to buy a GPS so it will help me to where i want to go. Does any of you owe one and know how it work? Do I have to buy a service too?
Thanks
Thankyou so very much for your time and kindness.

we have a tom-tom which was really affordable (i think around $100?) and has been awesome for us. you don't have to have service for it, it comes programmed with all the maps you'll ever need. you do sometimes have to update it online, my husband handles that but it's free. there are apps you can buy like where to find the best restaurants, etc. -some you can download for free. we LOVE ours, and i feel like it was a great bargain. kinda like having google maps in your car talking to you. i feel a lot more confidant when going somewhere i've never been before, and we used it this summer to drive to florida. it's awesome...if you make a wrong turn it automatically resets and starts giving you new directions to get you back on track. never had it steer me wrong! the only hitch was that once we were driving down a brand-new highway that wasn't in the system yet, and it showed us driving with no road...but as soon as we got back to a road it "knew" it was fine. love it!
Garmin is the best one. It is louder than the tom tom and other brands. We have a Garmin and some other brand (don't remember the name because we rarely use it) and the Garmin is easier to use, talks a lot louder, and haven't had any problems finding places with it yet.
My brother has a tom tom and just bought a Garmin because it was much better. With some of the other brands you can't hear it with the radio on and we have our Garmin set lower than the highest volume level and can hear it over the radio and the kids talking.
There are deals out there for Christmas around 99.00. We bought ours on Craigslist and was like brand new for $50. They used it for 1 trip and said they didn't need it anymore.
There isn't a service fee to use them.. just plug in cigaratte lighter and put in your destination and you are on your way.
I have a Garmin Nuvi and love it. There's no service to buy
I have a Garmin that I love, and would suggest you stick with Garmin. My parents have a Magellan that has given them tons of problems, and so has the company in trying to get the problems taken care of. Garmins are the way to go.
I have several (my husband works for Garmin). They are very simple to use and you do not need a subscription to use one. You will have to go online and update the mapping from time to time since new streets are popping up all the time, and I think this might have a fee associated with it. My favorite ones are ones that have "text to speech". These actually tell you the name of the street to turn on ("in 1 mile turn left on Metcalf"). This is great because you don't even have to look down to see the name of the street, just keep your eyes on the road and listen for directions. You can either program in a specific address you want to go to or you can locate your destination (stores, parks, etc).
Ditto the Garmin Nuvi. We love ours. Just for fun, we put the British voice on for directions and the kids thought it was hilarious. Watch for deals - you shouldn't pay more than $100-150 for one. We got ours at Ritz Camera, of all places, and got a great deal on it. Good luck!
I have a garmin - nuvi. It just plugs into your lighter to charge and has a sticky holder to put on your window. No, I don't buy service, I just plug it into the computer every once in a while to get updates. It was less than 150.
Garmin Nuvi. They're the industry leader and a local KC company too. We take ours with us all over the US...it has never failed to get us where we want to go.
