My 17 month old son is a big boy, 36 inches, 35 pounds. We need a floater for the pool this summer but all the ones I have pound are for up to 30 pounds, he is still too young for the arm floats so I really want the kind that goes around his waist with the seat. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

I definitely recommend the bathing suits that have floatation devices built in. You can get them at boating stores, as well as target and walmart. Some of them even have a feature where you can remove some of the floatation "sheets" as your child learns to swim on their own (although I imagine that at 17 months he is not near swimming on his own).

I bought my son one of those one piece things. I saw they had one that was up to 55 lbs. It was about $20 at wal mart!

Hello ~ We grow our boys (4 of them) big too!!! LOL! Try the one piece wet suit with the built in "life vest", it keeps them up but also helps protect their skin from the sun. You can get them at Wal-Mart, K-Mart, Target, etc. and they are not real expensive (if I remember correctly they were about $20). Hope this is helpful to you. God Bless ~ J.

J.,

My son was a big guy, too. Why not just get him a life jacket? They have toddler jackets that have straps to go around the legs so it won't slip off. Try it on in the store to ensure it fits well. Do NOT get one "a little big, then he can wear it next year" because once he gets in the water, the jacket will rise and not keep his head out of the water. (Learned that one the hard way!!) : )

Hope that helps!

J., my suggestion is to buy a life vest flotation device from a boating store. Although they are more bulky than a floater, they will keep your son's head above the water. It is not useful for learning how to swim, but it is the safest way to have him in the water. They are rated by pounds, so you can select the one that is correct for him.

I bought my 20 month daughter who is 30 pounds a bathing suite with a built in floater from Walmart the small/medium for girls is 20-33 pounds. The name of the suit is "The Original Swim School" on the suit itself it says learn to swim with a dolphin on it. the tag that came with it says that the medium/large is 33-55 pounds with a chest of 22"
