Hi H.,
I use a book called "Honey for a Child's Heart" by Glady's Hunt. She has lists broken down by ages so you can use the book for many years to come.

My five year old loves the Berenstein Bear books by Stan and Jan Berenstein, and the "Little Critter" books by Mercer Mayer. Berenstein Bears teaches good lessons, and the Little Critter books are easy beginning reader books.
We also enjoy the Frog and Toad books by Arnold Lobel, Strega Nona by Tomie de Paola and (my favorite when I was little) The Chalk Box Story by Don Freeman (this is out of print now and can only be found at your library).
You absolutly have to check out SkippyJon Jones by Judy Schachner. There are two books in the series and I think a third one coming out soon. The Great River Regional Library has one that comes with a cd and it is the best. That one is called Skippyjon Jones in the Doghouse. Try it!!
I worked at a daycare and the favorite books were by the author Eric Carle! I even enjoy these fun books too.
My boys loved Jane Yoland- she wrote "how does a dinosaur say good night" and several others along that order. Also they like "Henry and Mudge books"
I don't know how old your child is, but I know the same feeling at the library. Jez Alborough I LOVE HIM!!! my 2 year old daughter and I both laughed out loud while reading his book so I went out and baught 3 more and they're all equally as great. He has alot of word rhyming "My name is eddy, this is my teddy, freddy." etc. But they illustrations are good as well, I will recommend him to anyone! Most of the books I've seen say ages 2-5, check it out, I hope you enjoy
I am not sure what age your children are but I would recommend these books for ages birth to about age 6: anythin by Sandra Boynton, some titles are "Pajama time", Banyard dance" and "Birthday Monsters". My daughter is almost 4 and my son almost 2 and they love all of them. We read "Pajama Time" everynight. If you have a daughter you have to get the Olivia series, Emma just loves them. Also, I am not sure who the author is and my son is sleeping with the book right now but it is called, "The Napping House". It is good also. If you live in the Milwaukee area try the Barnes and Nobles children section at Mayfair mall, the Staff is amazing and is really good at directing you in selecting great books. There are so many wonderful choices out there, my children have so many... but these are the ones we read everyday. Oh, here is another one I know the title but not the author, "How do Dinasaurs say goodnight". Again both my children love it. Hope this is helpful and happy reading.
I help as the Reading Is Fundimental coordinator at my daughter's school and for that age (we have 4K) I would actually recommend books that are non-fiction about animals, dinosaurs, trucks, etc. Weekly Reader is a publisher that specializes in books for pre-K to 1st grade. They have really age appropriate books. Also, the kids have been loving the classics that we loved such as Curious George, Berenstein Bears, Babar.
I hope this helps.
I just saw last night on QVC (or the Home Shopping Network) that you can by all of the top books featured in the Weekly Reader in a package deal. They are all top children book authors. I am going to look more in to this for my son.

We love reading in our house! Here are some of our favorites: Reeve Lindbergh, Nancy Patz, anything drawn or written by Steven Kellogg, Virginia Lee Burton, Margaret Wise Brown, Robert McCloskey, Cynthia Rylant, Rosemary Wells, Sandra Boynton, Lisa McCourt, Laura Numeroff, Kevin Henkis, Eric Carle, Patricia Polacco, Clare Turlay Newberry. When we first started at the library, we just started at one end of the picture book section and slowly worked our way through to the other end over the weeks and months; we didn't try to look through the whole thing each time. As we found particular authors our son enjoyed, if our library didn't have all the book they wrote, we requested more from other libraries (your librarian can tell you how to do this). We tried to pick stuff we would enjoy reading, because if your child likes the book, you could wind up reading the book many many times before you return the book. Good luck!
The best books hands down are the berenstain bears by Jan & Stan Berenstain. Not only do children enjoy the pictures but the stories teach great moral lessons about telling the truth and helping others and such. I used to read them when I was a child and now my children love them as well
I love almost every author the other responses listed. My oldest son who is 4 LOVES Thomas the Tank Engine books. I also have taken my kids to the bookstore/library and let them find the one they might like...
Also I happened to be on the MPLS Public library website-they have a section for teachers/parents with a list of employees choices by age

We love Eric Carle. He has many books. A lot of them are award winning. Good luck!

I suppose it might depend on the age of the children. However Eric Carle, and Mercer Mayer are books that my son loves. He is 2.5.
Check out the books by Mo Willems...VERY funny
I LOVE Childrens books and used to read them to my kids at camp. I now read them to my son, but he is still very little and is in the beginning babay books.
Nonetheless, I love Squids Will Be Squids (http://www.amazon.com/Squids-Will-Be-Beastly-Fables/dp/06..., The True Story of the Three little Pigs (http://www.amazon.com/True-Story-Three-Little-Pigs/dp/014..., The Stinky Cheese Man (http://www.amazon.com/Stinky-Cheese-Other-Fairly-Stupid/d... All by Jon Scieszka) and Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs (http://www.amazon.com/Cloudy-Chance-Meatballs-Judi-Barret.... They are all funny, fairly ridiculous and kids love them! I also love Dr. Seuss books and Amelia Bedelia.
Have fun discovering kids books.
