Lump on Neck/head - Scared Mom

I was doing our daughter's hair this morning for school and noticed a lump on the right side of the cape of her neck (below her hairline in the back). I called the school nurse and told her to check it out for us and let us know if it is necessary to take her to the doctor. I also asked my daughter if she accidentally bump her head on anything. She said she did not remember and the school nurse says she checked it out for us and it seems to be a swollen lymph gland. She said we may want to follow up with our doctor. She also mentioned that when children seem to have colds their lymph nodes swell...however our daughter did recently get over a cold, would this have anything to do with it?

In addition, I want to express that our daughter did have surgery at 1.5 yrs old for a partial cleft palette. There was a tiny whole in her upper lip right at the crease and there would be drainage every once and a while especially when she would cry. When she had the surgery the doctor said there was a channel which mucous would come down and cause the drainage. Since the surgery she has had nose bleeds while sleeping which we thought were caused by her covering her head while sleeping and not getting enough oxygen. Does anyone think the swollen lymph glands have anything to do with the 5.5 year old surgery?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Ok, my husband took our lil one to the doctor and as most of you said it was something like a cold virus that her lil body is still fighting that caused the lymph nodes to swell. However, the doctor wants to do a follow up in 2 weeks or if they get bigger, immediately. She did say that since she has had a cold for quite some time she her body is still fighting to get the virus out her system. In addition, the lymph nodes move with a slight touch therefore they are not, from her knowledge to be serious...This leaves me until 2 weeks to bring my stress level down! I am glad to hear that because although our daughter is active and in active during her ill/sick days, she seem to be fine. She did not provide any antibiotics though. Thank you all for your advice and support...We appreciate your care and concerns...HUGS to ALL!!!!

Thanks

When my kids were younger they had the same type thing, especially my daughter, it felt like a pea under her skin almost. It was on the nape of her neck in the back by the base of her skull. I freaked out!!! I was told those were lymph glands and if she is fighting a virus they would get larger.
I would take her to an ENT, have them check her out. She could require possibly her adnoids out, if she hasn't already. I know my daughter was very petite so things like this were more prevelant when I felt them. She had very swollen glands with every illness at at 3 had her tonsils and adnoids out and that helped tremendously. Have her checked to ease your worries too. They can run a few simple blood tests too to test for lymphoma, not saying it is that at all!! :) I know what it feels like to worry and to have her checked out it is just best for you and her.
HUGS!

My lymph node glands swell up when I'm stressed out or about to get sick. Sometimes they swell up big, sometimes they are tender, sometimes there is just one, other times a couple. They usually go down in a couple of days. It sounds like this is what she's experience. If it doesn't seem to get better or you're still worried you should get it checked out though.

My 3 year old's lymph glands on the back of his head/neck get HUGE every so often. Especially when ill. They feel like a large marble under the skin. It scared me to death the first time i noticed them when he was 1. The doc says it's nothing to worry about. Some kids are just built that way :o)

I'd say it probably has more to do with her cold. My lymph nodes on my neck swell if they come into contact with wool. If she's been wearing a wool coat, that might be the cause. It's probably worth checking out with the doctor if you don't feel comfortable with it.
