My mother-in-law does face painting and is great! Everyone loves her...especially the kids. Go to www.fairygodmotherart.com. You won't be disappointed...everyone that has seen her work at my daughter's parties ends up hiring her for theirs...
My son will be turning 3 next month, and I am starting to plan his party. He has cousins that are older, so I thought it would be fun to have a magician, balloonist, and or a face painter. Does anyone have a referral that works in San Jose? Also, if you have any other ideas for me that would be great. Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi M.,
Try Balloonabilities.

Our friends have used this guy several times and even the adults love to watch him. My kids loved his "Monkey on a Motorcyle".
They are amazing creations.
M.,
It's a great idea for a 3-yr old's birthday, they are so into balloons at this age, although a magician may not hold their interest, unless there are a lot of older kids. I hired this lady for my son's 3rd bday and she did a great job of making very realistic figures; in fact friends of ours who had used other such performers mentioned that she was better.
BUT, she did not wear any costume, i didn't ask her to, maybe you can ask if she can wear something that fits with your theme. She also does face painting apparently, but i didn't choose that as i felt the kids of that age, particularly the boys, would be too fidgety. At my son's party all the kids were 2.5 - 3.5 yrs old.
As for a magician, i took my son recently to a bday party where the lady did both magic and balloon shapes. I could see clearly that my son didn't even understand the magic tricks and lost interest soon, but all the kids were thrilled with the balloon "swords" and kept running around.
From my experience, Jeanine does complicated things like Spiderman, motorbikes, dinosaurs, butterflies, etc, i do recommend her. As for a magician, just do a Google search; i did for "party entertainers" and here's what i found:

Try Phil Ackerly. He is an all-around entertainer and truly nice guy.
I highly recommend the magician "Magic Mike". He came to my birthday party and the 3-6 yr-olds were fascinated! In addition to very professional shows, he teaches kids magic (through Victoria's costume shop, I think). See http://www.magictimeproductions.com
My school hired this woman who did FANTASTIC face painting. She turned the children into butterflies, dragons, etc. for the school carnival.
Sandra Leathley. You hire her through Associated Entertainment Consultants ###-###-####
The school paid $600 for 4 hours...but I can't remember if the price had to do with the size of our event (whole school carnival that expected 600 people to attend), or if that is her regular rate.
