My 12 year old daughter is scheduled to have e the Mara orthodontic appliance installed in her mouth next week. Has anyone else's child gone through this? Were you happy with the results? How hard was it for your child to get used to it? What were the difficulties with this? Was there swelling? Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

My daughter had one of these and it worked beautifully. I asked her what advice she would give and she said 'just be careful when food gets trapped in there'. We bought her an inexpensive water-pik and it helped a lot.

She adjusted well to it- no pain, no swelling, not hard to get used to. We are very pleased with the results. I'll admit, I was concerned just like you when we had the discussion with the ortho. It was much easier than we expected!

Good luck to your daughter. Her wonderful smile will make all of this worth it!

I thought they only did that type of thing on younger kids whose jaws were still growing...isn't your child a bit old?

I would think that it would be more painful but I don't know. One of my best friends kids did devices similar to this but it looked a bit more like a shock absorber attached to both the top and the bottom teeth.

They put theirs on when they were 8 I think and they worked very well. Their jaws lengthened and then they did the braces to make the teeth straighten up.

My son 13 will be officially done with braces in December. Unfortunately, (6 months away) they are telling us they do need to remove 4 teeth and thus, extend treatment another 6 months. But that's another story...

I wish I had known about this option! My son refuses to wear his headgear (too uncomfortable) so IMO this is a good option. And you will get the proper results from the before and after photos I've seen. I am kicking myself for not choosing another local ortho (who uses these types of appliances). I had no idea he was around.

Is that similar to a Herbst? My son had a Herbst. It wasn't anywhere close to as bad as online comments had led us to believe it would be. We got him a waterpik and he used that a lot, also.
