You can buy a pound of fancy mix marbles (approx 80-90 marbles) for $6.50
I remember, as a kid, we had this HUGE glass jar filled with marbles... this Spanish woman named Lydia that used to babysit us used to bring us a bunch every time she came over, and we had HUNDREDS!!
I have no idea why I just thought of this.
Anyway, I was obsessed with them, and would spend hours lining them up and looking at each unique one.
My question is this: Does anywhere still sell marbles? I've found a few sites that sell 'collectors' marble sets, but that's not what I want, I'm not paying $100 for one stupid marble, LOL!! Does anyone have any that you still enjoy? Did you ever have some? I thought it would be pretty cool to start collecting them again...
ETA: I just called my mom and asked if she still had any of my old marbles, and she said 'Yes, why?'... I was like 'can I get those back?' She says 'Absolutely not!'... WHY?! She's using them as decor... in her LAUNDRY room. She said I can get them back when she dies. THANKS MOM, LOL!! ;)

OH YEAH!
As a matter of fact, my son has a marble jar (that he earns for various good deeds... like the year he spent learning to control his temper, and learning respect v DISrespect... and helping without being asked). It's a tall glass pasta jar that fits waaaaaaay too many marbles! When he fills it he gets a big prize (last time was Great Wolf Lodge). So I've bought a lot of marbles. Santa even gave him 5+ nets in his stocking every year for 3 years running (you know, because Santa likes encouraging good behavior).
There are the oldschool ones, and there are a bunch of newschool ones. Including ones for each planet!
My favorites newschool are "Orca" & "Emperor Penguin" & "Volcano" & "Satellite" & "Mars" & "Tiger" ... my oldschool favorites are the shattered/cracked glass one (have a bunch from my grandmother)
MegaMarbles is the largest maker of newschool marbles. And here's one of the better marble sites
Are you talking about the marbles you used to play marbles with? Not sure about them. I know craft stores sell marbles but they are solid colors.
Really I am sorry you lost your marbles. :p
I am sure someone has already used that joke but I couldn't resist. :)
Like some aggies and some tiger eyes....:)
We've found some really plain type ones at Wal Mart. Oddly, we've found some cool ones at the zoo gift shop. We get memberships there and go alot and the kids get to go in the gift shop ONE time on our last trip and pick out something. My son has picked out cool marbles in a bag the last two years. Good question, I don't know where else. I still have a Chinese Checker board game tin filled with the marbles we played with as kids.
Just wanted to THANK YOU for bringing this up! My son is 9 and would love more marbles for Christmas. I just checked my local Craigslist and I am buying a listing of 200 some marbles for $10 and they even come in an old tin lunchbox!! Thanks!
.
I've seen some at Hobby Lobby (if you have one.) I'm sure small hobby stores would have them, too.
Oh dear, I am marble obsessed now. I want some marbles!!
That's so funny that you say that.
My mom has a HUGE glass jar filled with them.
I still think they are so pretty.
Not sure what the fascination w/them but.....I love them.
Mom has them everywhere. So funny.
They show up in the strangest places at her house (drawers, hutch).
You could probably find some at Toys R Us in the "game" section.
I suspect it is because they are considered "chokers" and in recent years many parents have shyed away from having these things around, making them less popular.
Pretty soon we will all be locking up all of our normal household items and not purchasing others. Its been a slow progression over the years really.
Last night on our local news they ran a story about a 5 yr old girl who almost died..still critcal..after putting a zip tie around her neck like a necklace. She found it, I think in the laundry room. She was not breathing when they arrived at the home. After it was cut off her (parents did not do it), they said it was 3 inches in diameter. OMG. Stories like that freak people out and they quit buying common things until they become less common. JMO.
I have seen them at a family-owned toy store (which I try to patronize whenever possible, rather than to give my $ to Toys r Us, Walmart or Target.)
My grandparents always had a big jar of marbles too. We used to play with them, but never in the way they were intended to be used.
We have inherited a really nice marble collection from my husband's grandmother. Some of them were his grandfather's as a kid. And some have just been collected along the way. My hubby and son love to go through the jar and look at them. We still add to that collection. Flea markets and garage sales are a terrific place to look. Sometimes it's just a simple Walmart bag of marbles. Going through and finding the real treasures is half the fun, so we don't mind the mismatched set.
I bet they were beautiful!
Great game to work on fine motor skills and eye control.
All of the toy stores here in Austin sell them.. Some of the places, you can purchase them by the bag and then you can also purchase some individually.
My MIL has a HUGE bowl of them.. They include the ones her FATHER used to play with as a boy!
There are different colors styles and sizes.. They actually have names. People collect the old ones and the special styles.. And color combinations..
I've seen them at Michaels, Pat Catan, and several dollar stores. Toys R Us probably has them too....or Target....
Just checked, and you can get tubs of them on Amazon. :) Love that site...
they sell marbles at the dollar stores dollar general, dollar tree etc
I just saw at oriental trading they have marbles
I get marbles all the time for my kids. Local craft stores always have marbles. The ones I buy come in bags of 100. Some of the bags have marbles that are all the same, some are solid, others have stripes, some are are an assortment of all the different types.
I look for sales on them. I can get 100 marbles for 50 cents when on sale.
