Masters Before Medicare

Check with your local Lion's Club. They may have one of these devices that is used or have the ability to find one. One of their missions is "sight and sound". Your local government office will be able to tell you where the closest Lion's Club is and a contact number.

I am a retired history teacher and loved it very much. I hope you can find one of these devices for your mom. It would mean so much to her!

Your letter is so inspiring! It's incredible that she's getting her masters! I'm guessing if your mom is that dedicated on fulfilling her dream that she may have some suggestions on something that she maybe could use. If the cost of new equipment that you would like to purchase is prohibitive, perhaps her college may be updating some of their equipment and may be parting with used equipment that would benefit you. Or maybe the organization RFB&D (Recording for the blind and dyslexic) can give you some guidance. Good luck!

Hi A.. Your mom sounds incredible! As far as something that can read text to her... I happen to work for an assistive technology company and we have a new product called the Classmate Reader. She can download any books and have them read aloud to her. It is a small portable devive she could bring anywhere. She could get some great free books to download from a free site called bookshare.org They specifically help the blind. What about recording your favorite time in history and why and have the rest of her friends and family do the same. Or read a passage from a favorite history book. You could even add your favorite time in history with her.

What about giving her memberships at different history places, like Museum of Science and Industry, Field Museum, Cantigny, a trip to Springfield.

Hope this gives you some help or sparks some other ideas.

This may sound silly but you could make a touchable scrapbook for her marking her triuphs along her journey. From your baby socks to a pebble from the park she took you to as a child then a tape she used to get her masters. Use your imagination.

Going back to school at any age is scary, but finishing a Masters degree while legally blind is absolutely amazing. I know I don't know your mom, but please tell her someone (ME) (and an old lady at that) thinks she is wonderful and I couldn't be more proud of her than if she was my mom. A great gift may be a subscription to Audible. It is a web site where you can get all the latest books to download to your IPod or MP3 player. Not too expensive either. Just go to www.audible.com to set up an account. They have just about everything ready to download.

How about some books on tape or CD that she could relax and listen to for enjoyment?? I would imagine that she could use some down time right about now!
