Hi moms,
I am ready for some form of birth control, my doctor ordered microgestin for me. I was reading some reviews and they weren't so good. I am currently breastfeeding a 9 month old, and am worried it might effect her.
I have also thought of doing natural family planning.
I marina after my first baby but really didn't like it.
let me know what you think.
ps. we are not done having kids, i just need to lose weight before we have more

What can I do next?

I actually took this pill for the last year and just stopped it one month ago. It made my period almost non-existent, which I loved, however it made my hormones go crazy. The final factor for me choosing to stop taking it was that I started feeling very down and depressed about life in general which is very out of character for me. I am now a little over a month from when I stopped taking it and am starting to feel like myself again. I definitely think it is a great pill for some women but clearly not the one for me. Best of luck!

I know this is late, but I take Microgestin and have for many years. It works great, and I have no side effects. I have never had any problems taking the pill though. I believe I did take it while I was breadfeeding too. That was 6 years ago so I'm not positive. Good luck to you.

I used Micronor and nursed for two years with no problem with two different kids. It's worth asking about.

Dear J.,

You should be on the "mini-pill" - progestin only while breastfeeding.

Otherwise Microgestin is ok... I have experienced moodiness and weight gain :( Vitamin B supplements help with the moodiness, but the weight gain is driving me nuts (especially since they say the pill does not make you gain weight!).

Best to you and your little one!

Most people will tell you that anything containing estrogen WILL decrease your milk supply, but any progestin-only will NOT. However, some women taking the mini-pill and even some forms of birth control with no hormones (like Mirena) have reported decreases in their milk supply. The best thing to do is to discuss your options with an IBCLC or a breastfeeding-knowledgeable doctor.

I'm on it and like it. I take the pills straight through (no placebo week) under my doctor's advice and have no spotting with this prescription. It's worked really well for me when other brands caused excessive spotting. I can't say how it affects breastfed children; probably best to ask the doctor or pharmacist about that.

That said, prescriptions vary so much by each person. What's great for me may not be great for you. Only way to know for sure is to give it a try.

Has your milk supply dropped? I thought that if you are breast feeding doctors usually recommended Progestin only birthcontrol (example: Micronor). I believe that birth controls with Estrogen components can cause a decrease in milk supply, and hinder the let down reflex. The Microgestin has Estrogen AND Progestin components in it. My doctor wrote a prescription for me for Micronor when I was discharged after delivery because I breastfeed.
If your supply and let down is still ok then I would not worry about it. Heres a link you may find helpful, it covers birth contol for breast feeding moms- hope this helps

After my daughter was born I took a "mini pill"- progestin only pill. I didn't like it and when my period came back it was really irregular, occurring about every two weeks. It took another 6 months off that pill to get regular again.
After my son was born we went back to condoms. Yep, they're a drag, but I will not use hormones again. We've decided we're done having children so my husband is going to get a vasectomy (yea!).
I wish there were a good/easy answer to this question. I would not recommend natural family planning while you're still breastfeeding. Your hormones are not as regular as they are when you're not breastfeeding and I think you might have a higher risk of an accident that way!

I was on this for many years and didn't have a problem. Though recently I was switched off this birth control to a progesterone only pill because my blood pressure is a bit high. If you have high blood pressure, this is not the pill for you. If your doctor ordered it for you, you probably don't have high blood pressure and should be fine.
