I suffered from Migraines most of my life, from a teenager on. (I'm in my 30's now) I tried all the pills and shots they offered. Birth control, no birth control, no chocolate, no caffine...you name it, we did it.

On the advice of a friend, I went to see a holistic acupuncture expert. I went twice a week for the first several months for acupuncute treatments. This combined with a mixture of natural herbs got rid of the headaches that had made me incapable of functioning for years! The friend I went with was also rid of her headaches as well as other ailments.

The treatments were about 30 minutes long and very relaxing. (Most of the time I dosed off while I was there.) Once you get into a good place, you only go once a month for maintenance. I did that for about six months. Since then, about 4 years - I can count on one hand how many migraines I have gotten. (And Excederin Migraine gets rid of them.)

More and more insurance companies are starting to pay for treatments like this. At the time, I used my flex account to help me pay for mine.

You can try all the drugs, you can sit in a quiet room with a wet washcloth on your head, you can change your diet....and some of that works for some people...EACH time they get a headache. But why not try and get rid of them for good??

Good luck! And I hope you and your daughter feel better soon!!

my sister had the same problem. after years of going to drs. she found out that artifical sweetners gave her the migraines.
She stay away from anything with fake sugar. This has helped so much for her. She found this out on her own when all the doctors could not give her a reason for the migraines. Best wishes

My husband used to get really bad migranes, the kind of migranes that effected his life. he couldn't tolerate light, noise, anything. He would get sick to his stomache. Anyway, we tried the chiropractor. Now he doesn't get the migranes, and when he feels them coming on, he goes to the chiropractor, and he doesn't have to worry about it effecting his life anymore.
You could try that and see if that helps.
Good luck!

I used to get migraines also and birth control pills made them way worse. I eventually found out that it could be from lack of blood flow to the brain and started baby aspirin every day to thin out my blood and now they are gone.
Baby aspirin are great because you can chew them up. It's worth a try.
Good luck,
J.

I have tried everything as well and the only thing I have found to make them better is to go and get a massage once a month.

I used to get those migraines too - where I couldn't stand light, noise, and kept throwing up - even after there was nothing left in my stomach. I tried going to the doctor first - no help there. So even though I always thought chiropractors were quacks, I decided to try one. After a lot of treatments, I am CURED. I haven't had a migraine in years. For short term relief, try a heating pad on the back of the neck plus a cold compress on the forehead at the same time.

Dr. Copp in Jordan, Minnesota is the one who helped me.

Hot Bath, Heating Pad, Relaxation in the dark, Sleep it off, Migraine medication, Pain Killers. I do a variety of those things. One of my many triggers is that I don't wear my glasses on a regular basis and sometimes just putting on my glasses helps. I have pretty good eyes it's just a stignastism and it really gives me headaches sometimes. My brother get's horrible migraines too and the ONLY way they go away is when he ends up vomiting for some reason and bam he's better. They're very hereditary in my family.

Peppermint oil is a natural option, applied on the temples, inhaled and/or put on the tummy. I have had them in the past to the point up vomiting, never used meds though. Still get bad ones during my period. Lavender is nice too. I have a website www.3623.daisybluenaturals.com again peppermint essential oil when the headache starts and through out, lavender essential oil to help relax and induce sleep, the sleep easy pillow mist works wonderful for relaxing and to induce sleep. All natural ways to help prevent and treat headache. Have heard some great success stories. Good Luck

Sometimes its genetics. I work at a hospital and we get a lot of patients and young teenagers there with migraines all the time. To be very honest sometimes there isnt a whole lot you can do about them. They can do extensive testing on both of you. I would for sure talk to your Dr. about that. I see it alot though and really havent seen much good come out of it. but there is hope. make that appt. if you have them and now your daughter does something genetically is going on it sounds to me. I would go from there and when it comes to pills for her. crush them up and put them in something for her that will help.
good luck

Hi D.,

I, too, have a 22 yr. old daughter with horrible headaches. She's concluded some is from preservatives, color dyes, gluten, etc. in foods she eats so she's gone to a lot of organic vegetables and meats. She still can get headaches or she cheats and gets them. REcently I found "white willow bark" at Mother Nature Foods and it's the an excellent natural pain reliever. You might try it...you can't take too much so if initial dosages don't help...incrase them. It's all natural. But do you think any foods you eat with unnatural ingredients could be triggering the migraines? My daughter likes herbal tea and just found out most of them have caffeine in them....that causes headaches too.

Just thot I'd suggest what we've tried...

QUIET DARK ROOM WITH COLD DAMP WASH CLOTH ON YOUR HEAD, OR A "BE COOL PATCH" I THINK THERE CALLED ITS A PATCH THATS FEELS COOL WHEN OPENED AND PUT ACROSS YOUR FORHEAD NEAR THE FLU AND HEADACHE MEDICINE, ALSO I FIND JUST APPLYING PRESSURE TO MY TEMPLE AT THE SPOT OF THE MIGRANE HELPS, OTHER THAN TAKING MEDICATION THATS ALL ONE CAN REALLY DO. HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi D.,
My mom, sister my 5 year old son and myself all suffer from migranes also. My mom told me to eat a banana and take a shower with the hot water on as hard as it would go pounding on my head for a long time. Surprisingly enough I tried it twice and it worked. My sister does shots and pills. I don't know anything about those. I always eat chocolate that seems to help me.
Goodluck migranes are terrible. My sister one time had a migrane so bad she didn't even recognize our mother. Good luck again. C.

I know you said that she can't swallow pills, but I have migranes and Imitrex really works for me. The pills are not that bid and you can cut them in half. I have suffered from migranes for 10 years and found Imitrex about a year ago, and it's worked wonders!!

Try to cut out the artificial sweeteners like someone already said and also corn syrup can do it. It is in A LOT of things and can cause migraines.

I also have done accupuncture and chiropractic care and they do more for me than medications! Just make sure you find a reputable one.

You may also consider having her tested for allergies....they can cause migraines/headaches without other symptoms.

D.,

I've suffered with migraines since my early teens. In my late 20's I started using Verapamil as a preventive measure. It did help to tame them but has lost its effectiveness in the last couple of years. My Neuro recommended something to me at my last visit. Butterbur, a natural supplement. I found it at Vitacost (online). If you search their site for "butterbur", search results with Butterbur for around $21.00. Description says it is used for bladder health. But, if you search for "Petadalox", the search result is for Petadalox which is also butterbur (LOL) for a slightly higher price but says it is used for blood flow to brain.. etc.
