I, too have suffered with migraines since I was in middle school. Aside from those hormone changes during pregnancy when mine were more frequesnt, I have never been able to identify a trigger. Mine aren't as severe as those of many others, but I do have the visual aura which serves as a great clue that a migraine is beginning. I found out, quite by accident, that if I take any type of pain reliever ASAP after I notice th beginning of the aura, I can eliminate the actual headache, and have only to contend with the aura. They are like a blurry or blind spot in my vision and seem to pass across my eyes, from one side to the other, lasting about 20 minutes. It doesnt matter if I take aspirin, Tylenol or ibuprophen...the important thing seems to be that I take something before the actual headache starts. I do try to put my head down and close my eyes until the aura phase is over. I have never failed to avoid the actual headache by doing this. Sometimes my head feels "tender" inside afterward, but it is NOTHING like the "axe in my head" sensation my migraines bring. I have avoided taking prescriptions and/or daily meds for 30 years since I started doing this. Good luck to you!

I empathize with you. Migranes stink! I was getting them 2 and 3 times a week. I was totally useless! I finally went to a neurologist and she put me on Verapamil. It's a blood preasure medicine. I don't have high blood preasure but it worked for me. I have only had 1 migrane in almost two years. The one I did have wasn't bad at all. I took a relpax and it was gone in a few hours as opposed to being out 8-12 hours. Be careful of Excedrine. My doctor told me that they can cause what is called a rebound headache. Good luck.

Hi L. A--
Sorry to hear you are having migraines. They can be horrible. I am 39 years old and have had them since I was in the 6th grade. The only time I did not have them was when I was pregnant and a several months after I had my daughter. But, when they came back, they came back full force. Unfortunately they can be hereditary, which mine are-my father, my 1/2 brother, and both grandmothers had them. I have an 8 year old daughter and unfortunately she was diagnosed last year with them and she is now on topamax, after getting it in her system it seems to be helping her. It didn't work for me. You need to find out what is the cause of your migraines. I kept a chart of what I ate-food plays alot into it. Foods containing MSG you are suppose to stay away from, chocolate, those are the only ones I can think of right off the top of my head. I know I cannot eat alot of guacamole, or I will get a horrible one and have to go to the hospital. Keep a chart and see when you get them and what was going on in your life. Stress is a biggy. I was a paramedic for 13 years and lack of sleep and increase of stress was a big thing for me. My neurologist sent me to one on one stress management therapy and that helped. I also got massages at least once a week or every other week. I noticed a big difference when I kept that up. When you have an idea of when you are getting your migraines, then you need to find a good neurologist and let them help you. I am on an antidepressant, even though I am not depressed, and Nadol, my migraines are under control. My neuro strongly disagreed with me taking Execedrin Migraine, since it was full of caffeine. I was taking anywhere from 2 to 8 or 10 a day, depending on if I could take a nap or not, since that seemed to help also. I had to go through detox of caffeine, and it was not very good. So, if you do take Excedrin be careful! Now I take Motrin as soon as I feel one coming on. If they get to bad I take a Vicodin. Knock on wood they have been pretty much under control, with the help of my neurologist. It took awhile and a lot of prescription mediciation to find the right combination, but we did. Sorry I went on and on, but I hope this helps. There is a website for migraines, that gives you a chart to help you keep track. Go to webmd and look there, and google migraine and you will find a lot of websites.
Good Luck

As crazy as it sounds, an ice pack on the back of your neck works wonders. I am not quite sure why it works, but both my husband and I will do this and always feel better. The length of time needed varies on the severity of the migraine. Sometimes a couple of hours is necessary, but that is a short time in comparison to the 12 hour migraines I have experienced before I started doing this. Good Luck!

If you don't have a prescription, I have used Excedrin Migraine and a full sugar Coke before. Drink the Coke pretty quickly to get the jolt of caffeine. Also, an ice pack a the point of pain helps.

I also took Excedrin Migrain and it worked very well for me as long as I laid down and closed my eyes for 20-30 minutes or as long as it took for it to mostly go away. Mine only got to a Migrain when I would get other headaches and not get rid of them then it would develop into a migrain (example)I might get a sinus headache (front of the forehead)then it would develop into a tension headache (base of scull and down neck)sometimes added cluster headaches and then eventually the Migrain would set in because I let it get too far. You would do well to find out if you are exposing yourself to something that is causing the headaches to start with, for me it was Aspertame. I used equal in my coffee in the morning because I was trying to get sugar out of my diet. A friend kept telling me to quit the Equal, one day I finally listened and low and behold I seldom get a headach now and I had had headaches pretty much daily since I was a young teenager (in my 40's when I found out I could prevent them from coming on!) now on the rare occaision that I do get a headache, I can usually cure it with a little accupressure if I lay down for 15-20 minutes! on the rare occ. that acupressure does not work, one (1) Ibuprophen does the trick! I'm telling you, find out what is causing them by taking things away till you figure it out! red dye is another frequent problem as well as tying your hair back with almost anything especially if you tie it snug! I can't use headbands, hair clips etc. and I have long hair! Ponytails give me a headach unless I use a scrunchie and leave it loose! good luck, and if this doesn't help you I hope it helps somebody else reading, Headaches are a symptom for something going on in the body (all pain is a symptom, you have to find the underlying cause to get rid of the symptom!)

My mom, sister, and I all suffer from migraines. In the past I used Excedrin Migrane but I think it is very important to find out what is triggering the mirgraines. About 2 years ago I did some research and found out that many of our everyday personal care and cleaning products contain many harsh chemicals that can drastically affect our health including migranes. I began shopping at a great wellness company and switched out all my cleaning products and shampoos, lotions, you name it to safer, healthier products that work great. My migranes have almost completely gone away since not having all the harsh chemicals in my home. I now get headaches only occasionally and never as severe. If you would like further info about the wellness company that I shop with, please let me know. I would love to share the details with you. Hope this helps!

I use to get frequent migraines. I read somewhere migraines were caused from a lack of blood flow. I started drinking more water, trying to get a decent night's sleep, walking a mile or more a day, trying to get fresh air daily, removed carbinated drinks, chocolate, beef, pork, chips, milk from my diet. I increased my intake of fruit (an apple or banana every morning)through the day, salads, good stuff... Also I began taking a one multi vitamin, two soy, three fish oil, one vitamin C tablets daily. Each night put the pills in a little drinking cup and before breakfast, I take these pills. I feel better and have more energy. When I think I'm getting a headache, I take Aleve or Advil. Also, if the headache begins in the back of my neck, I discovered these little adhesive heat patches. Try not to let things get to you.

OTC medications work great if your migraines aren't too severe. Excedrin migraine works great as does Advil migraine. My headaches would put me out of commission for two days, which, with four kids and homeschooling, just didn't work. I take a preventive medicine called Inderal (works great- no side effects for me) and I also limit my caffeine and sugar intake, however, when that time of the month rolls around, I am still likely to have a headache. I keep imitrex on hand, which is FANTASTIC! If you are having frequent headaches- talk to your doctor and also try to figure out what your triggers could be. Just going down to one cup of coffee a day and no more soda helped me a ton- even after being on preventive meds.

Hi L.,
I have had migraines since I was 8 years old- I vomit, become dehydrated, and experience severe pain. I have been on everything under the sun. I used to take fentanyl lolipops before they were taken off the market for rotting peoples teeth. I have finally found a medication that's not a narcotic and I am pretty sure that other people have been mentioning it, for me it's Epidrin, which I think is the generic name for Midrin. It is absolutely a wonder drug. No side effects, works like a charm, and like I said, my migraines needed a drug that you receive in an epidural before child birth!! Anyway, I hope this helps, the other thing you can do immediately is drink a cup of coffe and take an aspirin which is supposed to cause relief in the blood vessels of the brain. Anyway, I do heat packs around my neck and over my eyes and coffee immediately, often a hot shower, and Epidrin/Midrin- that's my perfect remedy and I have been suffering for years and years.
I wish you the very best of luck- migraines are terrible!! And I have a 2 year old- my husband is away a lot and if I get one, it's the WORST!
Take care, and make sure those migraines get under control, for you and your whole family.
Kindest Regards,

Many tension type and migraine headaches stem from a slight deficiency of magnesium. If your headaches do, magnesium oxide supplements should bring relief. Take 600 mg per day, divided into three 200 mg doses. Also feverfew is an herb particularly effective against migraines. Take 80 mg of an extract containing at least 0.2% of parthenolide, the active ingredient in feverfew.

Yes, Excedrin migraine works well, but if you haven't already, you really should see a doctor to be sure it's migraines, and not something MUCH MORE SEVERE. A neurologist will do a battery of tests to be sure there isn't an underlying cause. You should also have your eyes checked just to be sure.
There are many breakthrough drugs out there that work really well, but it all depends on your headaches. You don't want to be taking a pill if your migraines make you throw up. There are prescription tablets that dissolve on the tongue and nose sprays you can use also.
Also consider trying accupuncture. Let me tell you, I did, and that meant I was truly desperate for help. Especially if I was willing to put needles in my body. After about 1 month of treatment, the severity and frequency of migraines decreased. I could actually get to my meds in time to get rid of the migraine, instead of being near paralyzed from the pain. Most health insurance companies won't cover this treatment, but if you can squeeze it in, don't let that stop you.
Irregular sleep cycle can trigger migraines, so try to keep that regular. Watch what foods facilitate your migraines. For me, high sodium foods do this, and so does drinking O/C American beer. O/C American beer creates it's own MSG in the fermentation process, so I quit drinking those beers YEARS AGO! Sometimes, no matter how careful you are, you will get migraines. I get mine on averge, 18 hours before it's going to rain or the temp is going to drop.

Hi L.. My doctor placed me on Topamax 100mg tablets taken at bedtime. They have worked wonderful! Topamax is actually a medication for seizures. For the first month, I did notice some tingling in my hands, and I did lose about ten pounds, but then it leveled off. I was having migraines about twice a month, and now I am having them maybe once every three months. One thing I have noticed too is if I forget a dose for a few days, I feel a migraine coming on.
It's something to mention to your doctor, not one drug works for everyone. I had tried Imitrex, DH-145, and Relpax with no results. But then again, the Topamax does not work for my sister. For me, it is a miracle!

I also have had migraines and chronic daily headaches for over 25 years. I have tried numerous abortive and preventative drugs, prescription and OTC. For over the counter, I would recommend the Excedrin Migraine. If that by itself doesn't work, you can try it with the full sugar soda or add two aspirin to the dose. If I can catch it early, this usually works for me. Prescription-wise, I am partial to Midrin. It has the best results with the fewest side effects. But you need to be careful with abortive medication, OTC or prescription. Many of them, if taken too often, can cause re-bound headaches which are almost as bad as the migraine! Also, there are some great websites that have common migraine triggers. Some of the most common ones that people don't know about include MSG, artificial sweeteners, and too much or too little caffeine. Pay attention to labels! If the occasional OTC meds aren't helping, you probably need to see a neurologist about a preventative. I have tried several and am currently taking Zonagren, which is an anti-seizure medication similar to Topamax. Most meds that affect headaches are going to have neurological side effects, so you will have to weigh the pros and cons of having the headaches versus taking the meds. Plus, it can take a long time to find the right meds or right combination of meds for you. Be patient and hang in there! Google migraines. There is a lot of great information out there. If you would like to talk about other meds I have tried, feel free to email me at ____@____.com goes for any of you out there!

L., recently my youngest child was in an accident that resulted in a head injury.(10) Through the course of her treatment and recovery (she was waking with a headache daily on the scale of a 5 or 6), her neurologist treated her with an OTC medication, but stated that if it did not work that we could anticipated migraines being a part of her life. (Several of her immediate family members suffer from them).
Thankfully the OTC worked, but he mentioned that if it had not worked we would have taken the next step which was to avoid the 4 C's. Caffine, Chocolate, Citris, and Cheese. He said that "they" had found that people who elminated these one at a time could usually find the "trigger" but that the easiest and quickest was to just avoid the 4 C's and they found that people were getting significant relief.
Hope this helps.

Ice on the forehead or neck. Migraines are from your blood trying to squeeze through from your neck to head. Cold makes the veins/arteries(I can't remember which) open up so that the blood can go through. If you use heat, it will make it worse, because it will contsrict.

Hello there. I'm a pharmacist and I also suffer from migraines and daily chronic headaches. I see a neurologist, Dicky Huey, who is wonderful and VERY up to date with the current therapies.
I know that the antiseizure drug, Topamax, in low doses was recently approved for daily headaches (and has been approved for migraine prophylaxis). I took that and it did work for me with the major side effects being peripheral tingling and weight loss. To treat my migraines as needed I took midrin (while pregnant), however, there is a shortage of midrin b/c it is SUCH an old medication and I think they're phasing it out. My neurologist just told me that they can compound midrin at various compounding pharmacies in town if you needed it. I am currently on a calcium channel blocker, verapamil, for prophylaxis and take a medication similar to Fioricet...which is gold in a tablet for me b/c it will KNOCK out a headache or migraine in one dose.
There are also medications called triptans that work for some people...none work for me and MAN, they are expensive!!
I recommend seeing a neurologist, depending upon how many migraines you have a month. If you're averaging one or 2 a month, it's worth seeing a dr. I know that I'm incapacitated when I have one and with 2 kids and a newborn, I can't afford dto be down for long.
The over the counter meds, you've already heard of. You can take 2 aleve twice a day and 800 mg of ibuprofen 4 times a day if you needed to. And there's excedrin migraine...
I hope you find SOME relief!!! I know how aggravating migraines can be...
Good luck!

One of the major migraine triggers for me is caffeine withdrawal. If I have the same amount each day I am ok. I agree with the other moms about Excedrin Migraine. However, I haven't bought it in ages because two Tylenol and a glass of Coke does the same thing for me.

You did not say how long you have had migranes and what you have tried. I am 62 and dealt with them for many years. There is not one particular medication that is guaranteed to work on everyone and believe me I have been given EVERYTHING. Had one so bad once that I was in the hospital for two weeks and on medical leave from work for three months. After many years and many different drugs, my current MD prescribed Midrin and it works for me. It is my miracle drug. By now, I know my symptoms when I am about to get one and I immediately take two pills, get in a dark room and rest. Sometimes it is gone within a couple of hours.
That was a lot of info about me, but I wanted to express how difficult it can be to find the right solution for each individual.
I wish you the best and have already said a prayer for God to help you.

Sorry to hear that you suffer with migraines. My question is how often do you get them? Sometimes the food you eat can cause them. My mothers came from eating potatoes. Other triggers are everyday products we use. (Cleaning products, even our body wash and hair products) I changed to non-toxic products and my migraines are all but a memory. I also take my vitamins and grape seed extract. I know this is not what to take while you are having one, but I hope you will find the cause so you will never suffer again. D.

Hi L.,
I have severe menstural migarines and also sometimes during ovulation. My gynocologist and my primary physician have given me prescriptions for Zomig and Amerge. They both work wonders, the Zomig is given in a nasal spray and tablet. I recommend the nasal spray if the migraine has already kicked in. However Zomig makes me feel really tired and achy. The Amerge is really good. Can you tell when you are going to get a migraine? If you can tell, take one of these pills right away and the migraine will never get any worse. I know how debilitating these are. i have a 2 year old son and when I get a bad headache I can't even function, hubby has to take over. That is also the best thing to do, take a pill and lie down in a dark room for a couple of hours.
Best of luck to you.

After being on prescription medicine for years that didn't have the results that I could live with, still getting debilitating migraines and weight gain, I finally went to a chiropractor. Have never felt better. I didn't even realize I had lost my range of motion in my neck. I recommend giving it a try. I have been off of all medicine for 3 years now.

I take Excederine first and if that doesn't work after 30 minutes then I use a medicine that my doctor gave me. If you really have a problem with migranes then you should see your doctor. It may take some trial and error, but it is important to find a medication that will work for you. I know that when a migrane hits I am out of the loop for hours to days. Good Luck!!

I was having migraines at least four to five a week. The neurologist put me on Pamelor daily. I also take Singulair. When I feel a slight headache, I take Midrin. If that doesn't help then I take Zomig or Imitrex. I'm about to do a sleep study to see if there is another problem. Have you seen a neurologist yet?

i suffer from migraines as well. i take 2 naxoproxen( it is like aleve) at the start of one. If that doesn't work i go to my prescribed medicine Midrin( generic name is Micquin) it works almost always unless i wait too long. the trick i have found to help with mine are pay attention to triggers, i kept a journal to pinpoint what brings them on. Take the medicine as soon as you can. Talk to your doctor first before getting medicine or switching medication. Good luck!
I know migraines are no fun!

L., there are many kinds of migraines... my son started his at in first grade and by fifth grade he had one that lasted a year. We went through all the meds. He had grown out of them for the most part. But, when he gets one now he uses 3 Aleve. It makes a difference for him.
My migraines began years ago, but they went along with my period. And at the age of 35 I had a historectomy and they stopped for 4 years. And then they came back with a vengence. I have them daily, I take meds for them to prevent them on a daily bases. And I take Imitrex when I can't handle them any more.
To add to this, I have had one of the worst years of my life. Just a lot of bad things happened. So, I was put on an anti-depressant and the migraines decreased greatly. I have been to 2 different migraine Dr. and one over medicated me and I was in a stupper for 3 years. I quit him and went to a new Dr. and he has me down to 1 pill and no side affects. Sorry I dragged this out but life can be too much sometimes and you don't even notice.
Take care, J.

Maxalt MLT work for me and have done so for several years. Plus since they are in a soft form you can cut them in quarters and take only a portion when you feel them coming on which usually does the trick. If not you can take more. They will put you to sleep until you build up a tolerance to them. I have found that staying away from wine, chocolate and nuts does seem to help me have fewer. Excedrin helps also, but taken too ofter will give you rebound headaches, just what you need. There is a doctor names JoEllen (don't know her last name) at Southwest Physicians Center off Westgate and she specializes in headaches. Her husband is on disability because of them and she has done a great deal of research. If you can get in to see her it is well worth your time. Take care.

Have had hormone induced migraines monthyly since my DD was born 19 years ago...when Motrin stopped working I went to prescription...$$ Maxalt works for me but the cheaper, generic phenylbarbitol with codeine works best.
I have tried a million things but meds work best when I am in pain. Herbs are expensive and you have to take them daily. Imetrix (pills, shots, nasal spray) made me sleepy (no can do with small kids) Amerage made me sleepy. In the end they put me on The Pill on a daily regimen not skipping that week....it helped the most to even out my hormones. Also BP meds helped top. You will first have to find the cause then find what is best for you.
Good luck. I am sorry you suffer. I get the chills thinking about it FWIW my migraines when away when I went through menopause.

L.,you got some really great medical advise from most people so I will share with you what worked for me... I always noticed that a migrain would set in after a period of eating certain foods, I would try everything OTC including massages, hot baths, ice etc. When I had a migrain,I had to be in a dark room ,my kids had to be quiet and I would often be nauseas. I would also always get headaches on the first day of my period but since I have changed my diet to "gluten free" I have not had a migrain in 7 months. It all started when I went to see a nutritional counselor, who did some tests and put me through a 30day detox and then I started eliminating wheat, rye, barley and processed foods from my diet.I also just realized that my sinus allergies (mold/oak/grass,etc)have dissappeared sinse I've been eliminating these foods from my diet. I am gradually introducing more and more organic foods to our meal menu at home. I take a multi vitamin for women daily together with B-complex,vitamin C and just recently started taking magnesium. MY doctor did recommend that I take the magnesium at night as it relaxes you/your muscles and therefore aids in sleep.
I opted for the healthy/natural way due to medication,anti-inflamatories and anti-biotics really messing up my intestines.

My son used to get these and would be in bed all day and even throw up. Pedi put him on Imitrex to take as soon as he begins to get them and it works within 20 minutes. He hasn't gotten one in years. He would typically get them this time of year though.
