Mirena IUD - Phoenix,AZ

hi i have a medical assistant certificate and actually worked at a OB/Gyn clinic so i know a little about the mirena IUD. That is a very popular choice for birth control now and everybody who got it seemed to love it! downside of it though some people do have some light spotting or bleeding for the first 6 months and some don't but i think that is a good choice!

I recently (about a month ago) got the Mirena IUD and the only complaint I have right now is that I have been constantly spotting ever since. The doctor told me I could have this for up to 6 months, but after 6 months the spotting will stop and I may never have a period again, or if I do, it will be very light. So far I am really glad I dedided to get this. I haven't had any problems besides the spotting, but you just have use liners every day. I hope this helps!

I have that iud and I love it! I don't have to worry about getting pregnant and it hasn't had any effects on me like the pill did or those others.
I would really recommend it!
Positives:
I have no period. :) (Baby is four months on feb 7th)
He can't and I can't feel it.
It isn't something you have to remember to take each day.:)
Negitives:
The procedure of getting it put in is a little uncomfortable with some mild cramping and spotting afterwards for about 3-5 weeks. But it's not so bad! (It's nothing like childbirth and you made it through that, right?:) )

If you decide to get one, make sure that it is always comfortable and you cannot feel the strings. After the doctor puts it in, wait a few minutes and walk around to see if you can feel anything. I felt the strings in mine and was never comfortable with it, besides all the annoying spotting and bleeding. Two months after having it, mine started to come out when I was 500 miles from home. I pulled it out myself and I will never get one again!

I got one put in after the birth of my second child last summer. In my experience, there are pros and cons. The pros: effective birth control without having to thing about it; I don't even get my period anymore; I can't feel it and neither can my husband; the insertion was no big deal. The cons: I have back cramps and more ovulation pain than I ever did before. It does feel like those symtoms are lessening but they haven't been much fun. I also had a friend whose IUD perforated her uterus so just make sure you trust the doctor putting it in. I'd recommend it. We've been pleased with our decision to use it.

Hi M.- I have about the same story as you. I got a copper IUD after my first kid, and it made my periods so much worse, and they were already pretty bad. So after my second and a year of contemplating, I decided to get the Mirena (almost a year ago). One reason I was hesitant was that I had heard progest. can increase the chance for breast cancer, and my mom had it so I was leary. When I finally asked my Dr. she said that the IUD would be no increase to that risk. The IUD keeps the hormone right in the area it is placed, not throughout the body. So once I knew that, I made an appointment that day. I was sold when they said it would decrease my period symptoms. Pros for me were that I have not had a cramp since it was inserted, which is worth it by itself for me, my periods have definitely been significantly lighter- from many pads a day during my period to a few panty liners now, and I don't have to worry about getting pregnant! Cons- well the only con is that my period was unpredictable for about 6 months. But since it was so much lighter, it really never was a problem, like it would have been with before the Mirena. I have almost had it a year and it seems to be regulating and becoming more consistent, but I am hoping it goes away, like some women say it has for them! I am an advocate for this, if people have the same results I have, I think they will be very happy. I know a couple other moms who have them and I haven't heard any complaints. I hope this helps! I have 1 child 15 Months old and have had the Mirena IUD for over a year now I had it placed about 2 months after I had my daughter and I absolutely love it!!
I have to say though at first I had my reservations. It hurts alot to have it placed but is worth it. Then I bled for almost 3 months but no cramping. I kept calling my doctor telling them to please pull it out cause this was sure a form of birth control but not the one I was expecting. All the girls at work that had them kept telling me to hang in there and I am sure glad I did. Now I barely have a period at all maybe spotting once a month for about two days but absolutely no cramping which is wonderful. And at first I was uncomfortable with intimacy just knowing it was in there and my husband felt the strings but now we have gotten use to it and just ignore it. I love knowing I don't have to take a pill everyday. I hope this helps!! Please let me know if you have nay other questions.

I had the Paraguard IUD put in after my 3rd son was born. I also have 2 step-sons, & we decided our family was plenty big! Well, 2&1/2 years later I discovered I was pregnant again. Talk about a surprise. My midwife removed the IUD, and I had a normal pregnancy - and another little boy who is now 3 mos old.

I don't know if the Mirena is more effective because of the hormones (I can't tolerate any hormones). It's worth looking into though, and just to be aware that IUDs are not 100% effective. We're looking at surgical options now!

i have one i and i love it. it has made my periods a lot better my cramps are not as bad and my period is already lighter.

I've had it for over 3 yrs now and I love it simply because I don't have to remember to take it every day like birth control pills! Occasionally, there is light cramping but haven't experience anything major. Oh, definately my period is lighter or none at all (Love this part)! I recommended it to a friend and she approves. I used the Mirena for about a year. For me, it was great. I didn't have to worry about missing a pill or a shot, it kept my hormone levels stable which was a great thing because I was being treated for depression. Many forms of birth control aggravate that condition in many women.
But- it became embedded in my uterus, and so it had to be surgically removed and I had to find another form of birth control.
However, I would still recommend the Mirena to anyone considering it. The odds of having yours become embedded is very, very uncommon though. I just happened to be in that very, very small percentage of women to whom it happens to.
I would use it again if I could.

I have had the Mirena for almost 2 years now and i absolutely love it! There are 2 types of IUD's, the Mirena lasts 5 yrs and the other, called something different, lasts 10. After placement i had my mens-cycle for a couple more months, and now they are totally non-existent, which is a common result in most women. You can't tell it's there, and... this is the best result for me, it has lessened my "PMS" symptoms, such as mood swings, aches, & bloating. so i think it's awesome. If you're in a monogomous relationship, it benefits you (both) that much more! of course there are the typical warnings, and know that everyone is wonderfully and uniquely made so we all may not have the same exact results. ~M.

Hi there, I have a Mirena IUD and haven't had any problems. I only spot every 3 months, no periods every month! No cramping or anything else and the hormone is "safe" and is not linked to cancer. I also haven't had a mood swings, that some other birth controls cause. The best thing, you only have to think about it 1 time a year when you get a pap, then replace every 5. Also, if you decide to have more kids, once it is removed your body will begin cycling normally again.

My name is K. and I have the Mirena IUD. It is awesome!!! I have had it for 5 years and haven't ever had a problem with it. I rarely have a period and when I do it is light spotting. I would definitely suggest it!!! My best friend also has one and she loves it as well and has never had any problems with it.

I've been using Mirena for the last 3 years and I love it. I never think about it at all. My "monthly" is extremely light (if at all), no cramps and not a bother at all. It's the best form of b/c I've ever used. It didn't even hurt when they put it in. I just had some light cramping, like menstrual cramps, but it wasn't anything some advil didn't help with. The hormone is at such a low level that I don't feel any effects, unlike the pills I was taking before. Having children changed my body's chemistry and I could no longer tolerate the hormones in oral contraception. Mirena hasn't affected me at all this way. I don't have to replace it for another 2 years.

I've had a mirena for 3 1/2 years and I love it. After the initial 6 weeks of "spotting" -- more like the heaviest period ever I barely notice my period and almost don't need to use anything for it. I know of friends who've had issues with them falling out or causing issues but they still love it.

Hi, M.. I got the Mirena IUC put in when my twin boys where 4 months old (about 6 months ago) and I love it! I had in past years used the pill and this is so much better. When you're busy with family and work it's nice not to have to remember to take a pill. I had no issues with getting it inserted and my body seemed to adjust to it fine. And who can complain about lighter, shorter periods? I love it and highly recommend it.

I've had mine since the end of August and all I have to say are good things about it. I had no pain for insertion, little to no spotting, and minimal cramping following insertion. I often forget I have it until someone mentions it.

And I am breastfeeding so I still haven't had a period but many women have lighter, shorter periods, and some don't have periods.

To the poster that said that the babies concieved with an IUD in place die, is not true. I know a few women on a message board with IUD babies. It is possible to carry to term when you get pregnant while using an IUD. It does increase your chances of a miscarriage, but it is possible to carry to term. It is true that they are not entirely sure how Mirena works but they believe it is a combination of not releasing eggs, and when the body does, that it prevents a fertilized egg from implanted in the uterine lining, which is probably not thick enough to support it anyway.

I used the Mirena IUD for 5.5 years and I LOVED it!!! I did, and still do, think that it is the best form of birth control available. I didn't fit the profile perfectly – I was single and had never had a child, but I had NO problems with it. It has VERY low local hormones (the reason I tried it…) I have a skin issue called Melasma that prevented me from being able to be on the pill anymore. So it isn’t that I am against other forms of BC, but now, I would never go back - even if I could. Beyond the lack of systemic hormones, here are some of the other benefits that I found with it: (1) I didn't have my period for those 6 years, which was fantastic. And to clarify, my cycle wasn't being altered by anything, I was ovulating etc, just no bleeding as it didn’t "build up" (2) It is incredibly effective and I never had to think/worry about it (3) My husband could never feel the string, and I certainly couldn't feel anything unless I was checking to make sure it was still in place. And a side note, the hubby didn't come into the picture for the first 3 years of use - so there were one or 2 others who confirmed that they never felt it either ;) (4) Since it doesn't alter your cycle with hormones, those who do want to get pregnant can remove and start trying right away. I had it removed in order to start “trying” for our first baby; 3 weeks after removal I got my period so hubby and I were able start trying that next month. We conceived the second month of trying (feel VERY, VERY lucky as I am 35yrs old) and I am now 27 weeks into my first pregnancy and everything is going great with our baby girl. So, if you think it is a good option for you, I say absolutely!!!! I know that I will DEFINITELY use the Mirena again!!!! I recognize it may not be the answer for everyone, but it certainly is for me…

Hi, I used mirena right after my first child, who is now 14, then had it taken out and had a daughter, who is now 7, had the mirena put back in once again. Then, had it taken out and had another son in 2006, and had it put back in. I am on that today. I have a real good experience with the mirena. So, yes I do recommend the Mirena IUD.

I have the mirena going on 3 years. The string was cut toooo short and went up inside. I have to have an ultrasound every year to check it's placement. When I questioned the dr about removal, she told me I might have to have surgery to have it removed. Has anyone else had this trouble?

I had one for 3 years and it was fine. I spotted for a while after it was inserted, but then once my body adjusted I only spotted a few days a month. I loved not having a full period. I had a reaction to the hormones in BCP and it was a great alternative.

Personally, I recommend the Paragard IUD instead becuase that does not give you additional hormones and the Mirena does, yet they both work the same. I have the Paraguard and love it. No problems, never feel a thing, no heavy periods, no problems at all. It's so nice and easy.

I have a feeling the doctors are pushing the Mirena IUD because the company is giving them sales spiffs. That's the only one that was initially offered to me until I asked more questions and said I didn't want any hormones. Then suddenly they told me all about the Paraguard.

I am considering it as well. I spoke with my OB/GYN and she also should it to me. It seems like a great birth control. My husband doesn't want to have anymore kids, but I do. So I thought if I got this IUD, it can be removed at any time and we can have a baby. You can go online and request information for it.

I am one of the rare few who actually had problems with the Mirena. I had it put in after my 4th was born. Immediately I started bleeding and my OB/GYN said that was just from placement and it should stop after a day or so. 6 weeks later the bleeding still hadn't stopped, it was heavy like a period too, and I gained 20lbs from the hormones that were supposted to not make me gain any weight at all. SO I had it removed and the bleeding stopped the next day and so did the weight gain. That was 2 years ago and it took all 2 years to lose that 20lbs. If you have had past problems with weight gain and birth control then I wouldn't use it but if there's never been any problems then go for it but it was a terrible choice for me!

I had mine put in after our son was born in 2006. I wasn't sure if we wanted more children or not. It gave us the freedom to choose what we wanted. It was also nice that I didn't have to think about taken a pill or trying to do something form of birth control while you are in the moment. The first couple of months I did spot some then it was like having no period at all and that was nice. We have now decide to have more children so I had it taken out in Sept of 2007 and now in Jan we a pregnant again. It works and is so easy

I have the IUD, I really like it. I have to say at first I was not sure, because for the first couple of months a minor craps and before this I never did. But I know longer have craps and hardly any period. And it can easily be taken out if I couse to have another child

I got the Mirena IUD last May after having a copper wire IUD for 7 years. I do like the Mirena better because periods are much lighter (very heavy with the copper wire) and I like the way the birth control works. The IUD has a slow localized hormone release to make the body think its pregnant. That's why periods are reduced, sporatic, or minimal each month.

Now, that doesn't mean your body doesn't follow a moon cycle though. Some days right before I am supposed to menstrate, I do get emo / moody (but nothing like the pill), and I have put on some weight. Also, I do not cramp the way I used to with the copper IUD. I googled the Mirena IUD and the pros and cons are listed on several websites.

My doctor was very thorough in discussing this option with me prior to and that put me at ease since I've tried all kinds of birth control methods. I am happy with this choice.

i had the mirena iud for 4 years and did not have any issues. it lasts for 5 years and you don't even know it's there. for the first month i experienced some light cramping and after that it was gone. being a busy mom i can't remember to take a pill the same exact time every day. it is very easy and you forget it's there. also periods lighten and are less frequent and some lose it all together. my sister was the lucky one. good luck and enjoy the freedom!

M., I just had mine put in this past week! The actual procedure to put it in place was a bit uncomfortable but I have already seen positive effects of the added hormones! I had my son 8 weeks ago and was just getting some very painful pms. By the next day it was gone :-) I am hopeful that it is helpful in the long term. The girls in my dr's office say it helps their pms too. Congrats on the new baby. Hope you are getting more sleep than us :-)

I recently had the copper one (Paragard) taken out. It has no hormones and one of the worst side affects is very, very heavy flow. I have heard nothing buy good things about the Mirena, and am getting one soon!

IT IS THE BEST!! I chose Mirena a little over a year ago and am so glad I did. We have 2 (a 2 and almost 5 year old) and haven't ruled out a 3rd, but knew it would be a while..so this seemed to be the best and is totally reversable. Shortly after getting it I had horrid cramping (which is just your body's response to something foreign in it) that subsided a day later..now I don't even know I have it!! I have almost no periods (actually my last was a few months ago for 1 day). I say go for it. It is costly, so consider that and find out if your insurance covers it, mine wouldn't but the dr. put it in as an outpatient "surgery" and insurance picked that up...

After my first daughter was born we decided to try out the Mirena. I liked it because I didn't get my period. I didn't like it because it poked me and the strings were thick and long and on occasion my husband would get poked. Then one day, after a year, all of my joints ached and I felt ill. I ended up in emergency and had it taken out. I seemed to have had a reaction to it and felt very dizzy for a couple of days. I later found out that this was not uncommon with the Mirena. Now after two more children, I decided to go with the copper T IUD and I am much more comfortable with it. It's much smaller, the strings are much thinner and there are no hormones. My periods seem to last longer, but are not heavier and there is no cramping. It seems like a much more natural and healthier way to go.

honestly ive never tried it, but... i just wanted to say, if you have this done, make sure they do a pregnancy test!!! a lady on one of my pregnancy groups just had this put in.... found out a week later she was 6wks pregnant when it was inserted. now shes in constant agony and worry that shes going to miscarry. but no one can tell her yes or no.

For everyone else I know Mirena worked great, so I got it because I also have 2 close together (19 months apart) but apparently there is a little known side effect (it is rare) that you could develop ovarian cysts. This happened to me, I actually developed a cyst the size of an orange within 6 weeks. So for me it turned into kind of a nightmare but everyone else I know who has gotten Mirena loves it! The risk of getting cysts is low I think but I just thought I would let you know about my experience so you can weigh your options!

It's the best! My husband is a physician and he swears it is the safest and most effective form of birth control. He recommends it when you are still in the fertile years but don't want to have more kids. My coworker has one and she likes it because she doesn't have to remember to do anything, and her periods are lighter. She said it hurt a little right when they put it in, but it was like 3 seconds of pain and that was it.

I know a lot of women that have the Mirena. I had it once myself. It sure did serve its purpose. One day I started bleeding. This went on for a few months, so I went in to get it checked out. Turns out the position was somehow altered, and so it had to be removed. On top of that I had developed 2 systs. I have no history of systs, so I'm almost positive that the IUD was partially to blame.
Like I said I know plenty of women that have one, I just was one of the small percentages that it didn't work out for.

I had my daughter 4 years ago and within a couple months I had a Mirena IUD put in. I was a little unsure before I did it but it has been a very good thing. It is nice not to have to worry anymore. One of the best parts is that I do not have a period anymore. Sometimes I will spot for a day or two but I have not had a full period for 4 years. I need to have it replaced in the fall and I will definately do so. Good luck and I am sure you will love it.

I am not sure what brand of IUD I had, and it was a long time ago (about 8 years, I think), but I had a horrible experience with the IUD. My periods became extremely heavy, and lasted for at least 7 days. I would have been able to deal with that, except for with each period came 2-3 days of severe cramping. Most months I experienced at least one day that I couldn't even get out of bed, they were so bad. My doctor told me to take ibuprofen, but I started taking so much of it that it was making me nauseous.

I would ask your doctor if any improvements have been made in the IUD, as I have heard that many women have experienced these same symptoms. However, a lot of women don't. If you are one of those lucky ones, I would say the IUD is a great method of BC. Good luck!

I too was very interested in Mirena. Once I talked to my Dr and went over my other options, I ended up choosing the Paragaurd IUD. Because it is basically the same things without the hormones, so no nasty side effects! I love it and have had no issues with it! I totally recommend it! Good luck!

I heard this from a friend "it is called the Mirena IUD. It makes your monthly lighter or non-existent, but only after 6 months of really irregular bleeding.

I have been using the Mirena IUD since 2002 when I had my first child and have had no problems. The IUD that I have is the 10 yr. I used to get migraines from the pill and so the IUD is perfect - not as many migraines. I love it - no problems at all. My periods have remained the same as before I got pregnant so it didn't affect that at all.

I have it for 3 years now and think its great! Less worry about getting pregnant. You have extremely light periods (spotting). It is a little heavier if I have more stress in my life the month before. NO cramps! I highly recommend it.

Hi Im am also M.. Anyway I am a mom of one a little girl, one years old. I did go on the mirena. I like it. You never have to remember to do anything except occationally check yourself to see of the stiring is in place still. That is all. You is also great to have cut backs on periods. I still have mine on occation but the cramping, bloating, and uncomfort all together is gone. I would recommend it. Let me know what you decide to do.

I'm sure you probably have a great gynecologist, but go see Dr. Jennifer Price at Sunset Women's Medical Clinic. She's great, young, personable and very knowledgeable about Mirena. I've been thinking about it. I'm on NuvaRing and I love it, but the thought of not having periods is tempting. Good luck!

I don't have any experience with that, but I will tell you that a vasectomy is so much better. LOL! You won't feel a thing, he'll be back in business in no time, and neither of you will have to deal with adding hormones to your bodies. It is a long time between now and menopause. You will have to be on some form of chemical birth control or have an artificial device inside you until then if you don't want anymore children. Let's say you are 30 now.... menopause hits at 60... that's 30 years of remembering your birth control. Heck, I can't remember my vitamins. LOL! It's a great way to free you from the thought of possibly getting PG again and that leaves having sex for fun. I have ever felt better.

I've had an IUD for the past 3 1/2 years and ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!! I find the best part of the IUD the fact that I no longer have a menstrual period! This is an outpatient procedure that takes about 15 or 20 minutes to insert and can be done in your OB/GYN's office. My husband and I also have two children, 6 and 3, and we're not sure if or when we would want another one so that's why we chose this option, we wanted to make sure we wouldn't have any "accidents" until we were ABSOLUTELY positive we wanted a third child. But I would definitely reccomend this to anyone. It has been very effective for me!

Hi! I have the Mirena IUD and I love it! No issues with my hormones. My periods are very very short and light and there is a longer period of time inbetween them. The only down side to this IUD is that I broke out with mild Acne. But once I started using acne face wash and topical ointment they cleared up very quickly. Other wise I highly reccomend this and I have also told most of my friends who have kids that it is a better alternative to the Pill. JMO.

I had the Mirena IUD put in after my daughter was born last year. I have to say I nearly gave up on it as I spotted for nearly 3mths. But my OB?GYN told me, "try and hang in there as long as you can it is so worth it"! And it was, I have only had 2 periods since and they have been very light and only lasted 2 days or so. I am glad I held in there. I did find out that everyone working at my OB/Gyn's office excetp one person has this IUD, if that isn't proof that it's good what is?

Absolutely HATED it!!! Not only did I have major cramping, but my periods came faster and heavier than ever before. I went to a new ob and she said it was the worst one for that. She also informed me that one of the major side effects of the major hormone in it was weight gain or resistance of weight loss, so I am still struggling with that 6 months after having it taken out. My hubby got a vasectomy and after a day and a half of icing and 2 painkillers he was good to go. Maybe an option instead of messing with your hormones.

Hello. I am currently using Mirena and I love it! I have been on it since October. I haven't had a period in a while. Sometimes I will bleed, but it's just spotting and it only lasts 1-3 days, then I won't bleed for months! I have always had a hard time with birth control. I've tried every pill to even the patch, and it always messed with emotions, or my sleep or my periods, but with the Mirena, I have had no side effects what so ever!

The Doc didn't tell me this but I was sick to my stomach with horible headaches for the first 2 weeks and then it was on and off for a couple months. However the website says this is rare. I did not lose my period but they are very very light. I don't even have to use anything heavier than a panty liner. I love not having to worry abou taking the pill or finding a condom. I am totaly satisfied with it and my body has adjusted to the hormones just fine.

I have the Mirena IUD & have had absolutely no issues with it. I think it's a great form of birth control. It does hurt some when they put it in & I was a little crampy for about a week. Then, I spotted irratically for a few months & now I have no period. :-) Hope this helps!

I have had the Mirena IUD for over a year now (it was put in right after I gave birth to my son). I really like it. I haven't had a real period in all that time - just spotting. However -- my sister had the oppisite experience. Her body rejected it, and she wound up with severe cramping, and it started to fall out (her GYN took it the rest of the way out). She was told that was very rare, though.

I've had this IUD for a little over a year now and it's wonderful. Light periods for a few months then eventually just spotting and sometimes no period. I've noticed moodiness before my period but I think I had that before. I've started putting on natural progesterone cream called "Femmcream" which helps the moodiness.

I have been on it for 4 years now and it has worked for me. I absolutely love it and am considering to stay on it. I still get my cycle every month but it is extremely light. It's so light that I only have to wear a pantiliner. I have also noticed that I don't get any cramps 97% of the time. I used to suffer from it really bad. When i do get an occassional cramp, it's nothing that a heating pad can't take away. I don't even need pain killers anymore.

I highly recommend it! I have two daughters, four and two, and am not positive whether we will have a third but am not ready to make that decision yet. It wasn't the most comfortable experience getting it in but seven months later I can say that I love it! I had cramping and some uneasiness for the first three months or so but now I don't have any problems with cramping and I barely have a period. For a while it was a little uncomfortable being intimate with my husband but that also faded with time. I think it's well worth it.

I was just about to get it myself this week. As I read deeper into the product information, I learned that although it is very rare, you can become pregnant with Mirena. As I understand it, if you do, the baby cannot survive. There also may be conceptions that take place, but are lost (they are not exactly sure how Mirena works). We decided to use the pill, since it prevents conceptions from happening. And if you do become pregnant with the pill, it is possible to keep the baby.

I LOVE the Mirena. I'm in the same situation as you, and decided to go that route. It was slightly uncomfortable when it was put in, and I had to take Motrin for a day or so (kind of feels like period cramping), but other than that, I don't even know it's there. It is Progesterone only, so it won't affect milk supply if you're breast feeding. I don't even have periods! Just some occasional spotting. I would highly recommend it!

I have actually had that in for over a year. I really love it. I rarely have a period. I didnt have any of the side affects. When I went to the doctor they gave me a dvd to watch which was really helpfull.

I got the IUD put in about 3 months ago. It was uncomfortable to have put in. The Dr. told me to take a pain releiver like Tylenol before I went in which I highly recommend because I started cramping right after they put it in. I am still having some cramping and spotting but it is starting to fade. Everyone that has it says to just wait it out for the first 6 months and then it will go away. I would also suggest asking the Dr. to cut the strings when it is first put in. My Dr. also said she can cut it more if my husband was able to feel it. I would say it's a good option especially if you're not sure if want to have any more kids!

I had a friend who had the Mirena put in after persistent bleeding caused by fibroids. It stopped her bleeding and now she doesn't even get periods anymore!

Hi I've had the Mirena IUC for 5 years now, and I absolutely love it. My periods are almost non-existent, and I am totally worry free. No weight gain. No side effects, or hassels. My husband can't even tell its there, and I often forget I have it too. I go back in this month for my replacement Mirena, and I will be worry free for the next 5 years.
