Mirena IUD - Tucson,AZ

I just had a Mirena IUD placed last Monday and I am still experiencing light cramping and my spotting has increased and now is more bright red blood. I have another 5 weeks before I see my OB/GYN for follow up. I'm wondering what other women's experiences have been with the Mirena IUD right after placement and long-term. I really appreciate the feedback.

What can I do next?

I got my Mirena placed at the end of August and the bleeding/spotting just barely stopped a couple weeks ago. It was on and off. Some days I would have nothing, some days would be light spotting and some days would be sort of heavy. My OB/GYN said it was all very normal and that it should decrease after several months and it did. Now I have no bleeding/spotting or cramps of any kind.

Hi H.,
I have had the Mirina IUD in since June of 2006. I have loved it! Its wonderful. I had some cramping and spotting in the begining. And from time to time through the years. I stopped having periods in the first few months. Which is common and amazing! From time to time through the years I will spot and/or cramp and recently got a full on period out of the blue. I have always gotten checked out by the OB/GYN and they say I'm in good health, and its common. You may stop having periods for years, and then they may just come back again. Its the best kind of birth control in my opinion, I will probably get another one put in when this one is up in 2011. I havent had to worry about birth control or periods for years!

I am in the 4th year of my third Mirena IUD. I had one placed when I was in college. It lasted a year until I decided to try to get pregnant, and it was removed. The second was after my daughter was born. Again another year and I had it removed to start trying again. This one was placed just after my son was born. I had some light spotting after each of the first two insertions that only lasted about the length of a normal period. After the third, however the spotting was on a off for about two months. Eventually I settled into the pattern of super light periods that only lasted a day or so and never needed more than a light panty liner. Cramps stopped completely after a few days and now the only indication that I'm close to a period is a bizarrely strong craving for chocolate. I have been so pleased with this birth control that I'm going to have another placed as soon as this one expires. This despite the fact that my husband is going in for a vasectomy this summer. Give it time. By the time you hit your check up appt, things should have settled. And since the Mirena is a plastic device, it doesn't have the scary track record of those old copper IUDs. They were a whole different breed.

I've had my Mirena for about 15 months. I had light cramping for about 5 days and light bleeding for about 4 weeks straight after it was placed. It wasn't a lot-- like 1-2 pantyliners a day-- but it was every day for that month. My GYN office said it was normal. (Part of how Mirena works is by thinning the uterine lining so the bleeding you're experiencing is your body shedding that material.) I had a couple of light periods after that and they were more spread out-- like 6 weeks apart. My last period was in August and I haven't had anything since. My experience has been pretty good so far but if you have any concerns or don't think you're feeling the way you should, then definitely contact your doctor. Best wishes!

I really don't know much about the Mirena but I do urge you to at least call the Dr. office about your concerns. There should be a nurse to talk to about your symptoms. I've heard such stories about that IUD, I would definiately call.
