I got Mirena in place when my daughter was 2 months old. She is now almost 7 months old. I bled/spotted for the first 4 months of having it then I had a period for 2 weeks...then went 6 weeks w/o a period then when it came it was more spotting then an actual period. Well yesterday I started having some cramps and started to not feel so great. What I am wondering is if this is normal after almost 5 months of having it in place? I know your periods can become irregular with it, but it still concerns me since I just had a baby in Jan.

I have it also and your period will be irregular for about 3-6months at first after which it will regain its own pattern again. mine lasted 1 month per period. DR said thats normal at first. if really concerned call your OB/GYN wont hurt.

Mirena has hormones in it and you should have gotten the 10 year Paraguard IUD...(I Have that)...I got in in after my son was born last year and the Paraguard IUD is NON-Hormonal which means I have normal periods every month and as we know every womens body should flow each month...Some women think it's cool not to get a period each month but in the long run it could cause issues with their bodies as they get older. The Mirena has been a real problem for friends of mine also....
Paraguard is good up to 10 years and can be taken out anytime before that If someone decides to want to have another baby....Check your insurance mine covered the whole thing and just let them know you were having problems with Mirena and I really do suggest get Paraguard IUD implanted in you...You will see and feel a better difference.

Here is some of a response I left for somebody last week about my experience with Mirena:

"I had Mirena for 11 months. I liked it at first, despite the spotting that lasted on & off for the first 4-6 months. Things then were great for a few months, but the spotting returned to the point that I was bleeding nearly every day. Talk about effective birth control! :) My doctor said that it appeared the Mirena was keeping my uterine lining TOO thin, so that's what caused the constant spotting. After having an ultrasound to make sure there was nothing else going on, I opted to have my Mirena swapped for a Paraguard. I've had the Paraguard for about 2 months now and am so much happier. The spotting went away immediately. On Mirena I didn't have a period, which was nice & convenient, and now I do have one again and it's a bit heavier and longer than my pre-IUD days. But I'd rather have one period than the constant spotting all month. The Mirena has different side effects for everybody & some experience none at all."

It could be that your body is still adjusting. I did have on & off cramping with Mirena that I just sort of got used to. I don't have any cramping with Paraguard though. I would say that if you are happy with the Mirena overall, then just give it more time. If you are okay with having a period every month (which I discovered I prefer - strange, huh?) then maybe think about switching it out for a Paraguard. Thankfully, my insurance covered the switch 100%. Best of luck to you!

I have had Mirena for about 15 months now and have not bled at all. I am also breastfeeding but I got my period back with my first child after 9 months (was still bf then too) so I attributed my not getting my period to the IUD. I have absolutely no side effects at all. You are still pretty newly post partum and if you are nursing at all that could really play havoc with your period too.
