I got an IUD in about May time. I havent had problems like what you are, but I do find it annoying at times. I spot constantly and when I get my period it goes on for 2 weeks when I used to only get it for like 4 day.s
Hi Ladies,
I'm just wondering if anyone has the mirena IUD and is experiencing the same problems as I am. I had it inserted in March, and for the most part I liked it at first. Then, I started feeling like I could be getting a yeast infection in May. The doc said everything looked good, but gave me a cream if I felt it again. The next period I got, I had a full blown terrible yeast infection, so I used the cream. It worked, but felt unresolved. I used a prescribed 3 day treatment 2 weeks later, again it remained unresolved. 2 weeks later I came down with the most awful, terrible yeast/bacterial infection I've ever had. The doc gave me Clindesse for the bacterial infection, and diflucan for the yeast infection. Things were good for a week or two, max. The doc decided to put me on a suppressive dose of diflucan, one per week for a month. I took my first dose 5 days ago and I'm itchy again, and ready to freak. I have never had so many female problems in my life as I've had since I got this IUD! Has anyone else had similar issues that maybe were resolved after removal? Or maybe going through it right now and think that it's the IUD? Thanks!

Hi J.,
I know how you feel! Literally for years I had problems with recurring yeast infections and bacterial infections. It all started when I went on Depo-Provera. I was on it for a year with constant infections and decided there wasn't anything else different in my life so I went off it and it cleared up in a couple of months (Depo stays in you system for up to 6 months). Once I started to feel better I went on the pill and the symptoms came back! I complained to my doctor about it and suggested that I thought it was the pill I was taking. She put me on a new pill and creams etc. to clear up the infections. Well after 6 different kinds of birth control pills and countless infections I decided my body just doesn't like the hormones. I went off it completely 2 years ago and haven't had a problem since.
So all of that said, Mirena puts a constant flow of hormones directly into you system (as opposed to having to be absorbed through the stomach etc. with the pill). My guess is that it's Mirena specifically not that you have an IUD. I had an IUD put in back in April, just the plain copper kind--no hormones--and I haven't had any problems yet. Mirena is also fairly new so there probably isn't a whole lot of recorded complaints yet. You should probably have it removed and see if the infections clear up. If they do you could probably have a copper IUD put in without a problem.
Feel better!

i had the Mirena inserted February 2004 and for six months following, experienced cramping and pain. I did not have the problems you described, but now that it is due to come out, I am experiencing the same problems as I did when inserted. I did not have a menstrual cycle the whole time, which I am happy about. But it sounds like your body is rebelling against it and it may be worth considering removing it and going with a non-hormonal brand. Lots of luck and keep us up to date!
I have never had an IUD but I had a diaphram years ago and had to get rid of it because it was causing me urinary infections (an uncommon side effect). Not every kind of birth control works well for everyone. I would seriously consider ditching the IUD if I were in your shoes. Maybe your body is still recovering from your last pregnancy as well. Eating yogurt with live cultures may help the yeast infections. (Some people will tell you to apply the plain yogurt to the yeast infection but I have not tried this.)
I am on my second Mirena IUD. The first one I had for 4 years and never had the yeast infection problems that you are referring too nor have I heard of anyone else that has had this side effect. I just had my second Mirena IUD put in back in March after having my little boy and have not had any problems. I don't think the yeast infections are related.
Another though may be that your husband has an infection also and you keep passing it back and forth to each other! Have him checked as well.
I had an experience with an IUD years ago and found that my body was rejecting it. The Doc said I was wrong but I had it taken out and have not had an infection since. Listen to your body and follow your instincts.
Best Wishes
I just had an IUD put in about four months ago and have had no problems. I did get the no hormone Paraguard, so it might be different. I would try some probiotics in addition to your diflucan. I used to get yeast infections all of the time and I started taking an over the counter probiotic and they infections have stopped. I got it at CVS. Culturelle is the brand. Check out this article and see if it helps. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/probiotics/AN00389
Good luck.
O J., sweetie, I'm sorry you're going througt that. I would have ripped the doctors head off after the second one. I have the paragard. I love it and only had one yeast infection. That was because my boyfriend and I didn't use a condom and my body wasn't familiar with his 'DNA'. The IUD's, while preventing pregnancies, opens you up and unfortunately makes your body more suseptable to infections. I don't want to insinuate but if you have changed partners during the time you've had this IUD, then that could be it. Or, possibly your body is just very sensative to his....ya know....and you may need to still use condoms. If I were you, I would refrain from sex until it is all cleared up, try sex with a condom and see what happens. If you still have this God aweful problem, take it out. I hope you feel better soon.
I've never had an IUD, but it sounds like you could be allergic to yours. Hopefully your insurance paid for it so you can have it removed without a losing all that money.
I'm sorry you're having so many problems. My second pregnancy was like that - I was in preterm labor for a month before the baby was born, with infection after infection (BV + yeast infections). I was MISERABLE! I have the Mirena and am not having any problems with it, but my daughter's nurse at the pediatrician's office had to have hers out after 6 months for recurring infections and pain and cramping. So I know it can happen. I just thought I would share that. Good luck to you!
Hi J.,
I have had the Mirena IUD for 2 years with, fortunately, no problems like what you are experiencing. I did have some random spotting in the beginning but it has stopped and I have had no periods, no spotting for about 1 1/2 years. Needless to say, I love it. My sister-in-law is an OB-GYN who not only highly recomends it but has one herself. I questioned her before I got mine and she didn't mention any of the problems you are having so maybe it is unrelated. I would ask your doctor if he thinks the iud is causing it.
hi i have had mine for 2 1/2 years and no problems, apart from initial stomach cramps when period was due, this is quite unusual to get this that many times, i live in the u.k but we may have treatment with different names, have you been taking any other medication besides this? this may sound a bit odd but do you wear cotton underwear that is not tight only yeast inf thrive in the heat. i would suggest that you keep that area really clean (im not suggesting that you dont) 3 times a day would be good, take what medication you have been given, and without sounding rude i would get your husband to wear protection as you could just be passing it to each other until it has well and truly gone, it may be worth treating him as well just to be sure, i hope this may help you if not i would be happy for you to contact me further i would be surprised if it was the merina as this is sterile but who knows!!
