Mirena Vs. the Pill - Putnam,CT

I've been thinking about using Mirena since we are happy with the 2 kids at the moment. My problem is that I've tried 4 different types of birth control pills (including low dose pills) and always have trouble with extreme sensitivity and pain with sex while on them. I was wondering if anyone has this trouble and if Mirena would make the outcome a little different. After all, isn't going on birth control supposed to be more fun for your sex life?

I have the mirena and I love it. It really is the no thought birth control. You should talk with you doctor to make the decision that is right for you. I love the fact that I don't have to worry about birth control for 5 years. It was covered by my insurance and only cost me the price of an office visit.

I do not have experience with birth control pills or Mirena, but I do know that some women will have decreased vaginal fluid caused by the hormones in the pills. Mirena has hormones as well, and could also cause the pain you described. Have you tried using a lubricant? This could cure the problem, and then you can choose whichever birth control, pills or Mirena.

HI D.~ I am a happily married, mother of three ages 8,8 & 13. I am also an OB/Gyn NP. YOu should call your Gyn office and make an appointment to discuss all birth control. there are so many different types- hormonal and nonhormonal. Also- the pain with sex thing is sometimes a pelvic muscle issue that can be corrected with a few appointments for pelvic muscle rehabilitation and not usually related to a birth control (altho - people with an IUD have said this- not those on the pill). Good luck~

have you considered the copper IUD? I too wanted a "no thought" birth control that was undoable, but didn't want the hormones because they gave me migranes. I've had the paraguard for a year and a half and I love it. None of the heavy cramping/periods I was warned about, and it's great knowing that it's easily removable when we want to have more kids. Just another suggestion...

Hi D.,

I have a Mirena in place and have for the past three years. I love it! When I first had it implanted I bled for a while (similar to the bleeding after birth) but it tapered off after a month or two. Now I don't even get a period anymore and I don't ever have to think about birth control.

As for the pain you are experiencing during sex, I would say you're probably going to have the same pain whether you're on the pill or not. I'm not certain of that, because everyone is different, but I know that I still have pain during sex and it's been years since I've been off the pill. My OB/GYN just told me that it's hormonal changes coupled with decreased vaginal secretions and thinning of vaginal walls that cause the pain. I'm not very satisfied with that answer (and neither is my husband!) but don't know what to do about it. I can say that the Mirena hasn't made a difference with the pain, only taken away the worry and the low libido that came along with the pill.

Good luck,

M.

I have Mirena, and I love it. Next Feb will be the five-year mark, and I intend to get a new Mirena inserted. I'm that pleased with it. Sex life is very carefree, I have almost no side-effects. Perhaps the only side effect is although my period is much lighter, it tends to drag on a bit longer, like drops for many days. But it's not anything I consider troublesome.

I highly recommend it over any birth control pill.

Good luck with your decision!
