That is a small error, trust me the IRS will not be hunting you down. You can get an amendment form on line (IRS.gov), fill it out and send it in.
So we filed our taxes the other day and are getting $ back. Yeah. I am a SAHM, so I didn't have a w-2. Well I had worked in 2010 and forgot that I had worked like 2 weeks in Jan 2011. I just got the w2 in the mail today. What do I do? Am I going to get in trouble if I don't do something? My husband said I can file it next year- is that right? I don't want to be penalized.
it was only for like $1000

I'd say just take care of it, you will sleep better at night. IF the IRS even notices, they will send you a letter requesting you to file.
You need to file an amended return by completing a form 1040X. If you paid someone to do your taxes, contact them and see if they'll do the return for you free of charge or for a minimum amount. It's very easy to do yourself. Note: this form cannot be filed electronically and must be mailed in. Here's the form.

Do not listen to your husband, you cannot simply file it next year, if you attempt to do that you will be penalized.
How did you file your taxes? If you used an on-line service - you will be able to go to your return, click on "amend return" and submit it.
DO NOT wait until next year to file the amendment - IF you owe money on those monies earned - you WILL be penalized for it. Get it done before 15 April 2012. No penalties.
All you have to do is file an amended return. It doesn't sound like you made enough money to likely make a difference.
I have two gals in my office who forgot about a W-2 for minimal hours early in 2011 at another job.
Just file an amended form.
Talk to your accountant. You can send in an amended return and if done by the books per the IRS no penalty.
I've done that before and you just need to provide an amendment to your taxes for this year.
You need to file an amended return this year. You earned the money in 2011, so it needs to be claimed on your 2011 taxes. Don't wait until next year.
They would tell you to file an amended return. But in all likelihood, they will find the mistake and adjust it on their end, WITH penalties. You should re-file so that it gets fixed now.
File an amended return.
You can also wait until the IRS notifies you of the error. They will correct your return and send you a letter with the corrected numbers on it.
Call the IRS and ask to be sure of what you should do.
i think you can file an amendment, i would contact who did your taxes or if you used turbo tax contact them and ask how you can do it.
You will be fine. If you did your taxes via Turbo Tax - you can amend your file already.
You won't be penalized. You will be fine. If you didn't file on-line then just get an amendment form and add it and resubmit.
ETA: Either way, if you owe money or are getting money back, if you do NOT amend this year you will receive penalties for not submitting on time.
Your husband doesn't do the taxes, does he? If he does, never let him touch them again! And get someone who knows how to do taxes amend your return. I really mean it!
Dawn
As long as the government owes you money-you really don't have to file-and yes, you can do it next year.
You can file an amended return. No biggie. You've already paid taxes on it, and an appropriate amount, I'm sure so it may add to your refund if anything but get it out of the way now so you don't forget next year.
File an amended return. There is a special form for it. If you hold back, you could include it later but you might end up paying penalties. Better to file amended that have them contact you later.
