BUT I have question
since most of her useage will be when not connected to wifi and she will be watching a downloaded show or app
how do ebooks work?
do you read them via internet or are they downloaded to your tablet?
also are there a lot of free or cheap ebooks out there for kids?
also anyone know awesome downloadable (to be used offline) educational games ?
Thanks=)

I know I can read anything on my Kindle when ever I want but a Nexus, I don't know.

Like if I use my Kindle app on my laptop I have to connect to read the book but once it is loaded I can disconnect but on my Kindle the books are J. there when ever.

I only have the free kindle ap for my iPhone.

Yep. I can read everything when I'm offline (And I currently have my phone shut off for a couple weeks to save some cash. Neither phone service NOR internet access. The books are downloaded, so they're good to go. People think I'm funny for carrying around my 'nonworking' phone... but it has my library, calendar, music... everything except phone service and internet).

Try going to project gutenberg. They have over 100,000 free eBooks between themselves and their affiliates (like amazon). The vast majority are titles over 70 years old (so the copyright is nixed)... which means it really depends on your daughter's age. If she's ready for Mark Twain, and Little House, etc. then you're good to go. If not, then you may welll be buying more child-friendly / low level readers for a time. http://www.gutenberg.org/

Here is a source of free and cheap books for kids: http://youngedition.pixelofink.com/

The books are downloaded onto the tablet, so you don't need to be online to read.

I own an "old" Kindle so can not answer your questions about games or shows or apps. My Kindle is only for reading books.

I don't know anything about the Nexus so I can't comment on that but I have a Nook tablet and I love love love it!! I do need to be online to download books, apps and movies, but once the download is complete it's in the memory and I can access it any time. My Nook also has a slot for an SD card so if I can download it onto my computer then move it to the SD card I can access it on my Nook. Things like Netflix or Hulu you need internet for no matter what type of tablet you have.

As far as free stuff. There's a ton of it out there. I have 250+ books and I've paid for maybe 5 of them, and the most expensive one was $4.99.

Barnes and Noble has Free Fridays. They're usually adult level, but sometimes they have young reader options. Plus you can search for free books on their website. They also have a great assortment of complete works by specific authors, and collections of classics ie; Adventure classics, collections of Fairy tails etc...Many of those are only 99 cents for the entire collection. The complete Grimm's fairy tales is over 5000 pages and was 99 cents.

Also try Smashwords.com. That site is for people who self publish though, so you won't get anything mainstream.

http://www.gutenberg.org is a site that has older books that are no longer under copyright protection. ALL the books on this site are free, but as I don't have young kids I don't know what the selection will be for them. Also I don't know if you can load them right onto your tablet. I have to use my SD card for these.

If you have pinterest try this page: http://pinterest.com/mizpiggy/nook-freebies/. All of the books on it were free at the time of posting, so if you can access Barnes and Noble this is a great resource.

I can tell you for sure that I'll be checking back on this post to see what other sites everyone else recommends to you because I'm sure there are many more out there.

Happy reading :)

A tablet is basically a flat computer , an ebook is J. a type of file , they are downloaded to the device. Yes you read them when you are off line.
To find the free books for the nook app , go into the store front and type in 0.00 kids books or 0.00 children's books and it will do a search for all free kids books. Now the search thing isn't prefect so you may have to look through a lot of mess to find what you are looking for. Nexus should have access to the google play store. look for kids games through that.
