Mosquito Bites - Jacksonville, FL

Plian old rubbing alcohol! Put it on a q-tip and dot the bite a few times and the itch goes away. I live in Indonesia and battle bites on a daily basis. I have tried all of the creams and sprays but alcohol works best.

This is an old house wives remedy that my grandmother used on me when I was little. I was outside all the time and had bites constantly. She would mix a little bit of baking soda and water to form a paste and then put it on the bite. That would stop the itching right away. Hope this helps.

I just got an email, have not tried yet but try putting a bounce dryer sheet in their pocket its suppose to act as a repellent then you won't need the gross spray. If the mosqoitos get to her put on hydrocortisone cream it works good and then try to distract her with a popsicle or something til the cream kicks in,
(so she wont scratch off cream) you will have to reapply before bed.

Sarna lotion, works very well, you can get it at Walgreens, CVS in the first aide section. Or if you want a more natural remedy the Aloe Vera plant works very well. I cut a stalk, put it in a plastic bag & keep it in the refrigerator & cut a piece off as needed for mosquito bites & also the occasional sunburn.

We use ice on the bite and then a paste of baking soda and water for the sting. If it starts to itch apply more ice. A "boo boo bunny" works great as my daughter feels as though she is in control of the situation. Since getting upset over a bite will naturally make it seem to itch more this helps to calm her down. We use boo boo bunny for all sorts of daily bumps and scratches for the same reason. It's a great harmless placebo effect!

My daughter gets bites ALL the time and the turn into big welts ..... I don't remember where I saw this but deodorant works great! Sounds crazy I know but .... men's old spice works wonders(clear blue). I know I also use my deodorant on my legs if I have razor burn ..... a girlfriend told me about that years ago and trust me ... a little dab and it really works. According to the Kirkwood-Webster Journal in the St. Louis metro area, antiperspirant may be all one needs to bring down the intensity of the itch from your latest summertime bug bite.

Dabbing a bit of your favorite roll-on(we use the clear solid .. dab if on our finger and put it on her quickly so its no big deal to her ... but sometimes she likes to do it) on to the afflicted bite area seems preposterous at first. Why would something that normally keeps one from sweating be effective in stopping the itch?

Dr. Ken Haller, a SLUCare pediatrician, explains that when the mosquito bites the skin our body reacts by pushing more fluids toward the affected area which, in turn, ends up further irritating the mosquito bite, for example. If you use an antiperspirant - rollon’s are recommened by Haller - the bite won’t get sweaty and therefore is less irritated.

After Bite does a great job. Works on any bug bite and it somes in a small tube so you can carry it with you.

Also, if she'll let you, the dr. once told me to run the area under hot water, as hot as you can stand, for 3 minutes. That helps too.

You can use Tea Tree Oil from The Body Shop. I have a girlfriend that swears by this. You take a little dab of the oil and rub it on the bite and it should take the itch and clear up quickly. Good luck!

Calamine lotion is good for itches. They also have a bite stick for itches at your local pharmacies, etc. I have found the best prevention for bites when it first came out years ago is Skin-tastic. I swear by this as I used it on my grand daughter and it is the best thing I have tried to prevent mosqito bites. Good luck and I hope this helps.

Try "After Bite" for kids, or if you prefer an all natural product get "Burts Bees Bug Bite Relief", both work really well, the "after bite" is a dollar cheaper and easier to find, the "burts Bees" you'll have to go to a health food store. Vinegar works too, but it stinks! Lol... Have a great summer w/ your little one :)

I know they say laundry or dish soap. Also, there is raw sliced onion. Some people say honey.

There are wonderful essential oils you can put in a spray bottle and spray on your child that are non-toxic and repel insects. Lemon and Purification (Young Living Essential Oils only) are wonderful for that.

If you have an itch from a bite, lavender oil is great, Melrose is also wonderful for any skin irritation, cut, etc. Doesn't burn the skin.

My primary doctor told me just last week that the lastest thing is 'VICK'S SALVE' I just laughed, but got home later in the evening sitting on the porch with my husband and wham, I was bitten. Got the Vick's out, itch stopped right then and there. Only used a small amount. The doctor reasoned that it is the menthol or the camphor. He also told me that it works for fungus toenails. Rub on three times a day to the affected nail. He said his podiatrist friend had been prescribing this for a few months to his patients with great success as many cannot and will not use Lamisil due to the effects on the liver. (don't know, don't have fungus nails, but did get the mosquito bite.)

OK- its gross but true. As soon as you see a bite, soak a tissue in urine and hold it one for about a minute. Do not wash it after. No itching and the bite will be gone in two days. The urine helps break down the anticoagulant proteins that the mosquito leaves behind. Your body trying to get rid of this protein is what causes the itching. The sooner you can get it on, the better.

My 9 year old and I mix baking soda and water to form a paste and that works for him. I wonder if witch hazel and baking soda together would work?

Also, the paste the first person at the bottom posted worked on jelly fish stings when I was a child.

I've used After Bite for wasp stings, ant bites and mosquito bites. The other "home remedies" like the baking soda paste and the essential oils work well, too. Good luck!
