So What Happened?

i went to the surgeon appt and he said we are going to just keep an eye on it. usually a brace works when worn for 6-12 mos at around age 8..in more severe cases they do surgery where they break the ribs and fix them into proper place at age 12-14.he said there was nothing to do now and it usually causes no problems.some children will have less stamina ...like when running the mila at school, and pain during growth spurts but nothin really bad..thank God!!! thank you all for your advice

Most physical and mental problems we have are due to allergies. You may want to look into NAET.com for allergy elimination. I have been eliminating allergies for a number of months now, and I am seeing improvement in my body!

Be well.

Why didn't your pediatrician discuss this with you further? Im sure if you make another appointment or call, he/she would be happy to answer your questions. Don't be shy.

I would get your child to a chiropractor, she is not too young. Infants can be adjusted. This might be the best time to address this. It is certainly worth a consultation. I don't know where you are located, but I have a very gifted practitioner in Long Beach, Dr Mark Kennedy. ###-###-####. He is very honest. If, after seeing your daughter, he does not think he can help her he will tell you so. If he is too far away, look around your area. Ask for recommendations.

one of my twins (29 week preemies), he is now 14 months, was diagnosed with that, but his dr. said it is also called pigeon breasted. One of his ribs sticks out and it bothers me and my husband when we see and feel it, but it doesn't seem to bother my son. both his pediatrician and his pulminologist said it can't be fixed unless it is obstructing his lungs. He was also referred to a Thoracic doctor who told us the same thing.

Here is a site that gives you an overview and some treatments. It all depends on how bad the deformity is. Some children have no problems. My son had a friend who had a chest that went in and he had no problems. If it is really bad they do casting and bracing while the child's bone structure is still forming (and if those don't work, surgery is sometimes used). I would talk to the doctor and see if he will refer you to an orthopedic specialist and get a consult from him as to how bad it is and if intervention is needed and at what age it would be done and if there are other factors such as heart, lung capacity, etc. that you should be concerned about.
She may just have a mild one and they would do nothing if the heart and lungs are fine. I pray that your beautiful little girl will grow strong. Enjoy her! H.

Hi M.,
I have a now seven year old girl who was born weighing 1 lb. 4 ozs. She also has pectus carinatum. I am not a doctor but my Dr. has said there is nothing really to do right now except to consult a surgeon at some point in case you want to have it surgically corrected. Again, I might need to learn more about this but I think you will probably not have to do anything for the time being (maybe not at all). Our daughter has had this for several years and I've done nothing. Try not to worry. What does your doctor say?
