Ok, dear hubby LOVES the "sticky rice" that they haVe at chinese restaurants. I have googled it and WAY too many recipes come up! Its not the sweet rice, its more the texture of how it all sticks together. I went out and got a rice cooker. I een got the jasmine rice, but now I am clueless how to make my rice STICK TOGETHER! Please help Moms! Thanks!!!!

It's really easy. Basically it's just regular rice but made with a little extra water. The extra water is what makes it sticky.

I would suggest buying "sushi" rice. Sushi rice has to stick together to make the sushi right so it is usually the stickiest you can get.

Found this online...I have never used sugar in it, but what do I know...I also had a japanese friend tell me that she rinses the rice in water to get the starch off before cooking. I worked at a sushi restaurant and would see them doing the "rinsing" process. Never saw the sugar though...and the rice is VERY important...I think it's called Konriko rice and is in asian grocery stores.

* he following amounts will make about four cups of rice, enough to make several rolls or pieces of sushi nigiri.

* 2 cups rice: You will need Japanese short-grained white rice, also called japonica rice or sushi rice. Do not use American-style long grained rice as it will not turn out well. Japanese rice has the right amount of starch needed to make the rice glossy and sticky but not mushy or dry.

*
o You can find this style of rice at most well-stocked grocery stores or Asian markets.
o You can also buy it online from a store like Amazon.com.
o It is best to use the freshest rice possible.
* 3-4 tablespoons Japanese rice vinegar: Only use rice vinegar to make sushi rice. Rice vinegar is a mild vinegar made from fermented rice or rice wine.
* 2-3 tablespoons sugar: Use plain white sugar to taste.
* 2 teaspoons salt: You may use table salt, kosher salt or sea salt depending on your preference.

Go to the asian section of your local market. I shop at Sweetbay and they have one. There are some different rices to choose from there. And you are supposed to rinse the rice first before cooking. We use the flavored vinegar for it too. That's in the same section. It's called "NAKANO seasoned rice vinegar." It comes in all kinds of flavors. We like the Basil and Oregano flavor. Oh, and don't lift the lid of the rice cooker to check it or stir it. After it's done cooking just let it sit for a few minutes until you're ready to eat. Good luck.

Not sure if you can purchase Cal Rose brand here...what you want is a pearl rice and be sure and wash it until the water runs clear. Yes, thats right...wash it until the water runs clear. Cook as normal. I got that little household hint from my old Japanese housekeeper while living in Japan. try it...bet he will like it. By the way left overs make great Sushi!

I only know the method taught to me by my husband (he's Vietnamese), and it's not very scientific, but here goes... Put in however much rice you want in your rice cooker. Put in water until you can stick in your index finger with the tip of your finger touching the top if the rice (but not the bottom of the bowl) and the water comes just up to the first joint of your finger. Turn it on and let it go. Works every time. Oh, and make sure you're using the right jasmine rice. You have to get it at the Asian market. The ones at the regular supermarket or wal-mart are not the same.

Rice usually sticks together from over cooking and not enough water in it. But if you really want to know ask at the resturant you go to. A lot of these resturants are more than happy to tell you.

Ok heres the trick... you have to go to an Oriential store and they sell these wicker like baskets. you put your JASMIN rice in the wicker basket and place the wicker basket over boiling water (in order to steam your rice). Once the rice is done, you kinda like, toss the rice within the basket. and WA LA! WORLDS BEST.

that gives you an idea of what the "basket" looks like. They arent that expensive either.
we like to ball up the rice and then dip it in soy sauce.
ENJOY!

Jasmine rice is different than the sticky rice. You can find sticky rice in any asian supermarket. With a rice cooker, I usually do a 2:1 ratio [1 cup of rice to 2 cups of water]. Also 1 cup of uncooked rice makes 2 cups of cooked rice.

Sticky rice is my favorite. Served with chicken satay and a little sweet chili sauce [also found in the asian supermarkets] and it takes me back to my time in Thailand... yum!

With your rice cooker, you are supposed to put equal parts rice and water. To make sticky rice, you need to add a half a cup more water to it. Let it sit for a few minutes before serving after the time goes off. Good Luck!

I LOVE sticky rice too - I'm actually half Chinese, HA..maybe that has something to do with it. I like my rice to be one big lump of rice too - I would get teased at home by it. I don't like flaky rice. What I do is - first - use jasmine rice... much better. Then I just put a little more water in the rice cooker that what it calls for. I'm sure it's just as good and really quick to use some other method to cook rice, but I was brought up with the rice cooker and that's how I like rice cooked!! Now I want Chinese food!!! When's dinner A.!

I have a very, very, very easy method that makes fabulous rice, just like the restaurants make. It's so easy, you have to try it!!! First, use any white rice you like - I like using Jasmine rice. Second, get a glass bowl that is microwave safe and add 2 cups of rice and 4 cups of water along with a dash of salt. Third, microwave UNCOVERED on high for 20 minutes. Don't open the microwave until it's done. Fourth, when it's done, give it a quick stir and put a lid on it and let it sit for about 10 minutes. This is the time where it clumps together and gets really sticky. Trust me, you'll love it, it turns out perfect every time and IT'S SO EASY!

I agree with Rosemary. We make the Sushi rice. You can find the container in either Publix or Walmart. Just follow the instructions. It takes 30 minutes. Just rinse the rice. Put the rice in the pot with water, let it boil together. Once boiled, simmer for 30 minutes and it's done. I think it's plain, so it does need some kind of seasoning added to it. But... it's definitely sticky :)

The easiest one I found was at Publix in the Sushi section. It's called Sushi Rice. The packaging is a green lid with a clear plastic container. It was EASY to make. We loved it! Good luck

hello,

I use a steamer for rice, vegtables etc. It has a bowl that sits over the steamer with a lid. It makes the rice stick. You have to measure the rice, and the amount of liquid to place in the bowl of rice but the cooking is the steam. Good Luck and enjoy! B.
