My Little Chipmunk. :P

My 10 month DD is almost completely off purees. She LOVES solid table foods, so she usually gets a fruit puree for breakfast, but other than that it's table food. She is definitely nursing plenty too. My problem is that she has discovered that she can chew up her food, then 'store' a big wad of mush in her cheeks. The first couple times she did it, she tried to swallow the whole thing at once and gagged on it. So I started checking her cheeks for food before letting her have another bite... but she hates this and it makes mealtimes a huge hassle. But if I DON'T do it, she hoards it! Even if I give her drinks of water after every bite she will 'pretend' to drink, or just drink around the food. I know she is capable of eating it, because she has been doing it for the last month. It's only this last week that she has started this clever little trick. Please tell me it's just a phase.... but is there anything I can do about it other than what I am doing? I have tried stopping the meal when I notice it, but then she gets UBER grouchy and will fuss be grumpy until she gets fed. (I even tried nursing her instead of solid-feeding her, but it must not be as satisfying for her)

What can I do next?

LOL. My son did the exact same thing when he was little. Even with checking his mouth, I swear I'd find him twenty minutes later, finishing off a little something he'd stored away. He would also try to shovel so much food in his mouth, he would have to hold his hand over his mouth while he chewed to keep it from falling back out!

My only advice is to make her swallow without driving you both crazy. Instead of checking after every bite... have her eat a bit, then offer some thing to drink, then check. Also, have her open wide and show you, rather than you reaching in her mouth so she stays in control.

Good luck.

i still have this issue with my two year old. but she is used to me checking her mouth. i have to constantly remind her to take smaller bites and eat what's in her mouth before putting anything else in there. if you figure out a way to help, i'd love to know. i'll definately follow this post to see what others have to say.

when she chipmunks, why don't you just pull out pureed food and leave it at that. That way she gets the food/nutrition she needs and she will catch on pretty quickly.

Oh, one of my 2 1/2 year olds does this too. She 'threw up' bacon all over her church dress because she was hoarding and tried to swallow it all. She has done it for a while and it is very frustrating for me too. We have started making her show us an empty mouth before she gets another bite. (hard to do because she feeds herself) She does well with things like nuts. She asks me to break it in half. I guess its because she doesn't want to have to stop eating them. (we don't let her have any more of a food if she spits it out) She has done this off and on for over a year. I will be watching the other answers in hopes of a good solution!

I don't have an answer but this is kind of funny. My little cousin used to do this when he was young and one day my aunt told him he was getting no pudding if he didn't eat his veggies (he was 3 1/2) so he ate everything or so we thought! After the pudding was eaten he proceeded to spit out the veggies which he had stored in his cheeks!!! It was so funny but after that my aunt checked his cheeks 1st and he stopped doing it. :-)
