I am exclusively breastfeeding for 7 months now. When I leave for work, the nanny feeds him my pumped milk. Whenever I'm at home and during the night, I breastfeed him direct. I noticed that when he is given the pumped milk, he only finishes 12 oz when I'm at work. This is from 9am (last time I feed him before going to work) and 6pm (when I come home). He is still gaining weight and is at 18 lbs.

Do you have any ideas on how to get him to drink more from the bottle? I only feed him solids twice a day, breakfast and dinner.

We use playtex drop ins. We have tried avent but he didnt like this.

What can I do next?

If he's gaining weight, don't worry about it. Some just don't like the bottle. Mine never took one. I take care of another one since she was 6mo old, and it took her a while before she got used to the bottle. Then she had no problem. She was also eating gerber baby food in between bottle and breast. And she did just fine like that. Now they are both almost 18mo old and both are healthy weight.

Try different bottles until he likes one, but not from you. Have your care-provider do it.

Hi J....

I exclusively breastfeed my son and now he's 17 mo. To this day he won't take a bottle. When I started work back in April of last year I also would pump my milk and have my husband feed him. My son would reject the bottle every time. We tried every type of bottle that was out in the market with no luck. We finally gave him a sippy cup and surprizingly he drank all his milk. It took us a couple sippy cups to find out which one he liked best. I found the one's with a soft top (Born Free) worked best at the time. Now at 17 mo. my son drinks from a straw. Don't worry if he doesn't take the bottle, it's one less thing you have to worry about.

Good Luck, J.

How about using a sippy cup or cup with a straw?

If this is all new, he may be just holding out for you to come home. If he is otherwise healthy, I wouldn't worry too much as long as he is taking in something.

if he is gaining weight and happy, i wouldn't worry about it. many babies "reverse cycle", they drink little to non while momma is away and make up for it when momma is back. 12 ounces is two good sized feedings. you're doing great!

My daughter is 7.5 months and when i am at work usually an 8 hour day she only drinks about 14-16oz a day. she does NOT eat any food yet and she is 18.5lbs. I would not worry. He will eat what he needs. When i pick her up even if she has just had a bottle she will nurse both sides. Its probably cause she missed me. He seems to be gaining weight just fine. Ask your pediatrician if you are really concerned. and Maybe he is ready for more food?! My daughter will not eat food i have tried so many things, so i am just waiting and keep trying. But when my son was around 8 months he dropped his breastfeeding alot and started to want to eat more FOOD.
Good Luck, God Bless
