Nail Biting - Glendale,AZ

Hello!

My 3 year old daughter just started biting her fingernails because she says they bother her when they get just that much too long. I usually clip them once a week, but it looks I might have to do that more like every 4-5 days to stay ahead of her. But what else could I do to nip this in the bud? I do not want her to really get into this habit!

Thank you for any ideas!

What can I do next?

Thank you D. for raising this issue. My 3yrs old daughter is also in the habit of biting her skin around the nails. I was also looking for some advice. I personally feel that it happens because of stress. Sometimes kids feel they are not listened and parents always dominate them. She does it while she sits idle and she does it in bed when she dont feel like sleeping. My husband says its kind of stress buster. But i personally feel that this bad habit should be nip in the bud. I noticed it when i spend more time with her or the day she gets more attention from me, i dont see her biting her skin. When she is happy she does not do this. See if that can help you.

Hi D.,

My son had the same problem. This is kind of extreme but you can have her wear gloves for a bit to make her conscious of what she is doing. It helped my son ALOT.

Hi D.,
Try this, set up a nail salon (in your home) and become a nail tech named__________ put on an accent and make it fun. While doing her nails teach her how "big girls" take care of their nails, and we do not bite our nails. Let her pick out her polish and treat her like a real "big girl" customer. I started this a long time ago for my daughter so she would have a "safe" place to talk to me and it worked like a charm. She's 8 now and asks me to do her nails and we have plenty "big girl" conversations. I hope this helps:)
Good luck
R.

Hi!
I know there is a "nail polish" at the beauty supply store (75th & Bell next to Little Gym) that will taste just awful when she puts her nail in her mouth. It's supposed to help people to not bite their nails. Just ask the people who work there, I'm sure they'll know where to direct you. Hope this helps! :.)
