Nail Biting - Virginia Beach,VA

My daughter is 2 years old and amazingly enough is a nail biter. She bites her finger nails and toe nails. I noticed the other day that her toe was bleeding where she bit the nail down too far. Honestly, I never thought this would be a bad habit that a 2 year old could pick up. Neither my husband or myself are nail biters, so we don't know where she picked this behavior up. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get her to stop?

What can I do next?

Please don't take this the wrong way because I am NOT saying this is what is wrong, but my grandaughter has ADHD and I did not know but that goes along with ADHD. Just didn't want you to miss anything that might be there like we did for a while.

I also have a problem with my six year old daughter. But the thing is, she doesnt bite her nails but picks them constantly. This is so bad her fingers are sometimes peeling and her nails end up real short and bleeds.

Well, both my kids did the same thing. I was so grossed out by the toes. The only thing that really helps is to keep them clipped super short. That way, there isn't much left to bite. If you're ready for it, my daughter stopped as soon as I let her put polish on - just the little girl, sparkly stuff. But, I think she was probably 3 before she cared about that. My son, on the other hand, just let the whole thing go finally. He's five now and over it completely. Good luck!

go to www.folica.com and they have a product called Mavala it is a topical treatment, you put directly on the fingernails or fingers and you could use it on the toes as well, it tastes absolutely horrible and she will not want to put them in her mouth. It is used specifically for nail biting and thumb suckers.

Both of my sons (ages 3 and 4 1/2) just started biting their nails. I got the bitter tasting stuff (ask at your local pharmacy, Target, WalMart, etc.). There's one called Stop Bite and you can also use Thum. It was behind the pharmacy counter, but I didn't need a prescription. I hope it works! Good luck!

Well I bite my nails and wished my parents tried harder to get me to stop, I don't know when I started. You could try that bitter taste stuff - you can find it online -and it is safe to use. Also because she is old enough to understand rewards <sorta> you can try to reward every hour that she doesn't bite her nails. Or try painting them and make the nails looks pretty and she might not want to ruin them. She is young enough that this can be stopped - since she hasn't been doing it a long time. Just keep telling her no biting and reward her often with stickers or candy or something.
Good Luck!
