I heard it on a movie and liked it. He wanted one name and I wanted another. He said he hated my choice, he always heard it shortened and that all those with that nickname had always been short and fat...silly isn't it.

We compromised while I was on the delivery table and forceps were up my crotch pulling her out. He looked at what they were doing and said I could name her whatever I wanted...

We are both from big families (I'm 1 of 6, husband 1 of 7) & both have a specific family name given to the oldest son in each generation, but we didn't want to go that route (so there'd be no "junior" or other nickname to distinguish father from son from grandfather, etc.). We didn't want a family name as the 1st name yet something still mainstream enough so that misspellings/mispronunciations wouldn't be a problem, names people have heard & generally associate with positive feelings; middle names, however, we picked from family - my grandfather's first name, husband's grandparents' last name (commonly enough used as a 1st name). That way we kept a little individuality but a little history. Not easy, is it? :) Good luck!

My husband's mother is deceased so we used the letters in her first name to create a new name for our dd. Her middle name is the first name of both of my grandmothers. Our son's name is a college football stadium (I know) and his middle name is my dad's middle name passed down on his side of the family.

Basically, we wanted something to be "family" ... either through the first or middle name. My first, I always liked her name, and her middle name (Nicole) is used (as the masculine version) throughout my hubby's family... it is also my hubby's middle name (Nicholas). The second, I wanted a "Katie"... so I chose Kathleen... couldn't come up with a middle name, but finally came up with Rose, after my paternal grandmother... we later found out that "Grandma Rose" was really Rosina Katherine! #3, her middle name is sort of after my name (Malia = Marie), and our son, was named Nicholas... after hubby's middle name once again.

Our kids are named per the meaning of the name and/or the history of it.
Which we researched.
Our kids match their names, splendidly.
Their names, also reflects our cultural heritage.

My daughter is named after 2 family members, one on each side. I wanted something that could grow with her, but have a nickname, and not be spelled weird or have her mistaken for a boy (my stepkids' names often get them confused for the opposite gender) or have nobody be able to pronounce it.

We started making a list from the TV Guide. Wrote down the first 2 famous peoples names we saw and took the first and last and named our son. Years later, nearly 8 months pg, I over heard my neighbor talking about guests she was inviting to a party. She told her friend, yes she had invited this particular couple. Then said, "I like Suzzane, but ________(the husband) is a jerk. I heard the name of this jerk,, and went straight home and said it to my husband,, and thats what we ended up naming our daughter. Yes she is named after some jerk guy I heard mentioned in someone elses conversation,..lol She met him years later. Hes a local eye Dr here and she went to see him once for an exam. We didnt care much for him and never went back,,lol yep he is kind of a jerk.

My sons name is nicholas because I've never known a nick in my life I didn't like! They are always handsome, out going and my son is the same! It had no family ties in my family but I wanted a girl I was going to name nuchole and since he wasn't a girl.... my mom wanted me to name him Samuel and back then I hated it. Now 15 years later I lime it! O well, he was meant to be nicko! My daughter is named madisyn. I don't like it spelled the traditional way and my husband wanted her to be named that so I played with the spelling. I like Layne so it actually ended up well, madisyn Layne. I love the "y"s! I wanted to name her Madeline but I didn't like how it sounded with Layne. My family names are baaaad and I wouldn't have gone that way, period!

My son is Benjamin Otis. Benjamin is simply a name that my husband and I have always liked/agreed upon. Otis is after my husband's grandpa who was a WWII POW and just passed away last March. He was an amazing man and he was so excited to meet Ben and was elated that we chose his name for Ben's middle name :-)

I changed my name when I got married, so when we had kids, I wanted their names to have a connection to my family. (Since our last name would obviously be my husband's family name, I felt like he was covered. Haha!)

So, we chose first names that we both liked and picked middle names with a connection to my family. My son's middle name is after my dad and my daughter's middle name is my maiden name.

I named them after relatives. I did not give the direct name in English but a variation. I wanted them to have uncommon but known names.

The closest we got to using any family names is my oldest son's first of 2 middle names is my husband's first name. After that we didn't want to name them after family and I was completely against any Jrs and thankfully so was my husband.
We looked at the things we loved, movies, books, literature etc. We started watching movie/TV show credits every time we watched something. My kids all have 3 names a piece with 2 middle names and then of course our last name. Each one is a strong person or character that we admire and value their contribution to something in our lives. So we have Star Wars names, classic literature, a couple character names from TV shows. Each name has special meanings to something my husband and/or I feel shaped us. We also looked at the meaning of each name and made sure that it was something we wanted as well. Several names were removed from the list because while the reference was perfect the traditional meaning was not something we thought fit.
I love my children's names! So do they! Except for initial helping some people spell a couple of the less common ones everyone loves them too.

Each of my children carry middle names in honor of family members. My sister also followed this pathway. We love it.

Somehow, my older son's name was chosen by my DH...he loved the name & I was okay with it. Middle name in honor of my gpa.

Our daughter's name was Gracie...named for my fav gr-gma, Grace E. Manns. My daughter's middle name was in honor of both my sis & MIL's middle names.....we always joked that we were sucking up to both sides of the family!

& my younger son was 24hours old before he was named. His 1st name is in honor of my very special gr-gpa....& his middle name is in honor of our fav uncle.

Family history means so much to me...hence our method of choosing!

I didn't really have a choice with any of mines first names..my husband was dead set on his choices for them...so I got to choose the middle names...and one of my children I decided to name after my father (middle name of course) and couldn't be more happier that I did because my father passed away 6 months after I gave birth.

Greg is named after his great-grandfather (Gregori - Russian) and my father.

Nicholas is named from no one in particular other than it's a strong Russian name.

Elayne was named by her dad. He wanted something unique and not often used...spelled differently...

My daughter is named after our mothers and a character from my favorite book. My mother's middle name is my daughter's first and my husband's mother's name is out daughter's second name, also the name of the book character.
The boy name we picked is just out of the blue. If we have a second child we'll reuse the boy name and use a variation of my husband's grandmother's name. It's Welsh, my family is Welsh.
