Hi all,

We are taking a quick 3 day trip this June w/our son to the Chicago area, Naperville is our specific destination. We will be seeing a medical specialist there but for the other 2 days we'd like to see some things. I have several questions since we have never been to IL:

1: How far of a drive is it from Naperville to the Willis Tower (my son wants so bad to do the glass walkout)?
2: Would it be better to stay in Chicago somewhere and take a cab to Naperville for our dr. appt or vice versa with traffic?
3: What Hotels are near a Whole Foods grocer or are there any GF friendly restaurants around?
4: Any recommendations for hotels either if you feel we should stay in Chicago or Naperville?

Thanks!!

What can I do next?

Hi! Well first off, I think you should just stick around in Naperville for the hotel prices and proximity to your doctor for certain. If you do take your son to Willis Tower, take a Metra train if you can. I have attached some links for you. The first is a list of Naperville eateries with gluten free. The second is information on the Skydeck at Willis Tower. (It kills me not to say Sears Tower, being a lifelong Chicagoan!) and the third link is for our transit train, the Metra. It’s safe, clean and affordable, and it let’s off just down the street from the tower.

I hope this is helpful!

Have fun in Chicago.

Willis Tower is about an hour drive away from Naperville. There is a Whole Foods in Naperville -- next to Nordstrom Rack and across the street from Costco :-) There is also a Trader Joes' close to Edward Hospital in Naperville.

There is a Marriott Hotel on Diehl Rd that just opened up. (I think it used to be a Holiday Inn, but it was recently renovated.) There are lots of other hotels nearby, as well as a SuperTarget, movie theaters and lots of restaurants. Also nearby is a restaurant called Two Mothers. If you call them, they will make meals for you to pick up based on your son's dietary restrictions.

There is plenty to do in or around Naperville if you have a rental car. Dupage Children's Museum is fun. So is the Morton Arboretum.

You will spend less money if you stay in Naperville and stick with attractions in the western suburbs. The hotels and parking in Chicago are quite expensive. Things are pretty well spread out, so you might have a hard time walking to other places of interest from Willis Tower (more parking fees if you drive).

I don't know of any, but I hear that there are a lot of GF friendly restaurants in Chicago. Naperville has all of the big chain restaurants, so if they are on board with GF options on their menu, you shouldn't have a problem.

Good luck to you! Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about Naperville.

Will you just be seeing the Dr once? If so, stay in the city. You can get good rates if you are willing to do it blindly (hotwire or priceline). There are Whole food groceries all over, but if you stay in the city, you should have a lot more variety in terms of restaurants catering to special diets. You can also go to some world class museums, and Naperville is just, well, a suburb. There is nothing there.

Do not take a cab. Drive or take the train.
