My 10 month old started getting a cold 2 days ago. Last night and so far tonite he gets up every hour. He sounds very nasally so I'm not sure if he can't breath or he just wants to be held. I would try to elevate a side of the crib but he moves around so much it wouldn't work. I don't have a humitifier were we're staying right now. Any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

Take him into the bathroom and shut the door and sit with him on the bathroom floor or on the toliet which ever is closer to the tub/shower and let a hot shower run. It will steam up the bathroom and it will act like a humitifer. Also, if it keeps happening take him to the pediactric.

We sat in the bathroom for awhile with a steamy shower running, or we boiled water on the stove & put it in the bathroom sinks. That really helped. Also, put a bath towel under the crib where you put the baby's head for the night. Our babies moved around a lot too. The elevation is enough to help, but is not so much that the baby would possibly sleep with his head lower than his feet. Just make sure it's not a real big elevation. We folded the bath towel into a square...like one would normally fold a bath towel, and stuck it under the crib...I think we used 2.

If none of that helps, you could get a cheap humidifier from Target or Walmart.

We put vick's on the bottom of the feet and then put socks on. I would still attempt to elevate the end of his crib. Also, lots of sleep if you can get him to sleep more.

Get a humidifier. Get Vicks and put it under his nose and over his sinuses (only a tiny bit and make sure not cuts or it stings), also on his chest. Cut out dairy (it makes the body produce mucous) - ie milk, yogurt, cheese.

Sit in the bathroom with steam. It works everytime when my 10 month old son and 3 1/2 year old daughter get congested. Saline nasal spray works as well. It clears the congestion quickly.

I recently had the same problem with my 7 week old.what really helped us was this GREAT nasal aspirator called BabyComfyNose (http://babycomfynose.com/) with a little saline. Hope it helps!

Put a pinch of thyme and two of sage into a bowl, then pour boiling water over it. The steam will help loosen his phlegm. Repeat as often as you need to. Get a saline nasal spray and use it as often as he will let you, and one of those bulb things to suck out the snot.

You can try some baby saline spray. I think it's called 'Little Noses'. That might break-up the congestion as well as letting the salt provide some protection against a sinus infection. You might need to use a bulb to help suction the congestion out (be gentle). However, be on the look out for symptoms of an ear infection, bacterial pink eye, or chest cold/cough, in addition to a sinus infection; all of those can be triggered by congestion that lingers longer than it should.

My son also moves around a ton, but what I do is put a pillow under his sheet so that he can't get trapped, but still has the option of being elevated. Saline solution and the nose bulb suction thing has been a God sent.

Do you have something like a bouncy seat that will keep him sitting up while he sleeps?

Steam in the bathroom is a good idea. But if you can put him in a warm bath and let him play for a while just before bed, that can do wonders too. Just sit and keep rewetting a soft washcloth with warm water and using it like a "kleenex" to "wipe" his nose. The warm bath water/steam from it, will help his nose drain and you can wipe it away without him much noticing while he is busy with bath toys. My kids practically didn't notice...

And a LOT of gunk can flush out of their noses that way without the fight of using the nose bulbs and saline rinse/sprays.

Rub some Vicks Babyrub on his chest and the soles of his feet to relieve the congestion; also steam from a hot shower (keep him outside of the tub!) will help too.

I agree with vicks and saline solution. I think at 10 months they still need the baby vicks but you should be able to find it easily. I would put it on his feet and his chest. Also, see if you can get him to drink more water...I know that's hard with a 10 month old, but it will help!
