Need Advice on Dealing with Constant Sinus Infections

It seems everytime I get a cold I also get a sinus infection. Normally I just let it take its painful toll and wait it out without taking any antibiotics. In the last couple of months I had a bad sinus infection that didn't go away. I finally went to the doctor and was told that I had a severe sinus infection and also nasal polyps. She prescribed antiobiotics to clear up the infection and steroids to reduce the polyps. She informed me that the polyps should reduce in size but will never completely go away and even with cutting them out they can still come back. I did get better after taking the medicines, but now I am getting over another cold and I feel that I am getting another sinus infection.

My question is have any of you had sinus surgery and has it helped? Or what other methods have you used to alleviate this painful infection. Obviously the best method would be to try to avoid getting the cold, but with two children and I also run my own daycare, it is hard to avoid getting sick when the kids get sick.

What can I do next?

Hello. I just wanted to tell you about something that I've been using for the last two years. My sister told me about it and then I saw it on Oprah. It's called the Nedi Pot. It looks like a genie lamp. You can find it at any healthfood store. Just do a search on the net and you will get all kinds of demonstrations of how it works. There is also other kinds of sinus irrigation that they sell in stores. Do a seach on Neil Meds Sinus Rinse. I have never tried it, but I know people who have. Since I started the Nedi Pot two years ago, I don't have any allergy problems and my sinus infections are gone. If I feel one coming on, I do the Nedi 3 times a day for a couple of days and that pretty much takes care of it. Hope this helps!

My mom has the same issue as you do. Recently her doctor told her that as soon as she feels a cold coming on to immediately take some Sudafed or another decongestant, even if she's not stuffed up yet. He said that will prevent bacteria from building up in the nasal cavity. Hope that helps!

I third the Neti Pot! It is awesome!! You can get one at almost any store these days, including Walgreens. The cost 15-20 dollars. I had mine for years before I worked up the courage to use it. Don't make that mistake! It is so easy to use and is very, very effective. Also, are you taking probiotics during and after the antibiotics? If not, you may want to go to a health food store and ask about a high quality brand. If you aren't already taking probiotics, you may need them for several months to recolonize your digestive system with beneficial flora. Happy breathing!

I agree with the person that said to try a Neti Pot. They are awesome! I would speak to my Dr. 1st, as I am not sure if they are recommended for those with chronic sinus infections.
