I have to fly for a conference for my job next month. I work from home now, so my work attire is whatever I want to wear. I need some professional dresses or skirts that are inexpensive yet professional. No suits.... just tops & skirts or dresses. Any idea or where I can find something like this that wont break the bank?

What can I do next?

I love White House Black Market. Not cheap and does not look cheap but pretty reasonable. I love the clothes I get here. Nice dresses too. Right now they are having a sale.

Ann Taylor Loft is usually reasonable

Dillards, Macy's, Nordstrom, etc.

Buy something that is going to last you and you end up saving money in the long run. If you find a cheap skirt, top... you might only get to wear it a few times before it looks worn and then you are out the same amount of $$ to get something again.

I'd get classic black slacks and skirt and put nice tops with them.

Good luck!!

JC Penney and Ann Taylor Loft.
I haven't been too impressed with Macy's lately. They have a pretty sad selection of the classic basics and too many wild, trendy and just cheap looking (IMO) clothes :(

Try JC Penney's, they should have a good selection and good prices. Kohl's wouldn't have as much of a selection, they've been disappointing me lately. You could also try New York & Company, they have nice clothing. They can be expensive unless they have a good sale going on. I don't have their pants/skirts but I love their tops, they are very flattering.

The Nordstrom Anniversary sale starts on 7/20. I shopped the preview sale, and I saw lots of nice clothes that weren't too expensive (less than $100 for each piece). The salespeople there are very helpful, and you can't beat their return policy.

You can also sign up for e-mails from Ann Taylor and Loft. Their stuff is constantly going on sale for up to 50% off.

Talbots is having a pretty big sale now too.

Not knowing what your size or body type is, I'm not sure which store would be better for you. I tend to think that Banana Republic, Ann Taylor, and J. Crew clothes fit a little better on slim frames. Talbots, Coldwater Creek, and Kohl's fit better on larger frames. Good luck! I hope you look fabulous!

On freecycle I got a black garbage bag filled of clothes - labels like Ralph Lauren, Banana Republic, etc. those that didn't fit me? I freecycled again.

Dressbarn if you want something brand new and not expensive
KMart - my neighbor was wearing a BEAUTIFUL sun dress on Saturday when she came over for my garage sale and asked her where she got it - KMart - part of the Jacqueline line - I went yesterday - TONS of clothes - and they were NICE too!!! You can put them on lay away as well so you don't have to dump the whole load NOW. You have time!!

GOOD LUCK!!!

I just went through this to accompany my husband on a conference -- I needed "resort casual" and "business casual." I had good luck at Marshalls and TJMaxx.

White House Black Market, Ann Taylor, Banana Republic.
Sometimes even Target has some good buys and appropriate for work, but try them on - the sizing is really off in some of the lines they carry.

I get a lot of professional clothes at Burlington Coat Factory, Ross, and TJ Maxx. Pretty dresses, slacks, skirts, and blouses.

You can probably do really well at a thrift sore too. I find amazing deals at thrift stores. It just takes a little time and patience to sift through so much stuff.

Salvation Army Thrift Stores, Goodwill, Value Village, or any other thirft shop, second hand or consignment shop in your area. No point in buying new, especially if you only need it for a conference. You can pick up dresses for $5-$10, skirts for $3-$5 and blouses for $3-$5.

Go to a suburban Goodwill or Salvation Army store. I bought my lucky interview skirt in Blaine for $5. :)

It will take a little time to find things that are just right, but you can find mix and match items of good quality (and names). Look them over for rips, tears, loose threads, and stains, too, just in case.

There's no way I would shop at the higher-end stores for something I would wear only a few times a year...or even once a month...even if I had a six-figure income...unless it was at 75% or more off. I have my children's future to consider... I also know that even if you have the money now, you may not have it tomorrow, so I try to spend as wisely as possible and save it for the rainy day that may come.
