Wy delightful 9 month old has had three very miserable days. She's just not comfortable in her own skin. She has no fever. Tylenol doesn't help much. She just seems miserable, crying, fitful sleeping, tired, rubbing her eyes, runny nose (not green). I would have thought teeth, but I really don't see anything in there to make me think that. (she doesn't have any yet.). So what is this? I thought maybe she isn't getting enough milk from me during the weekends, as I am producing less and less (another frustrating story, I put her to the breast A LOT over the weekend to soother her, hopefully stimulate more production, and to see if she is just hungry. She hasn't had much of an appetite for solids and won't even take warm water from the bottle (she usually likes this). She has slept pretty well at night. Saturday she never really napped (Eek!) but Sunday she took 2 good naps. The only time she was happy all weekend was when we went to a friend's house to watch the Oscars. So is she sick or teething? Or is it something else? Do I need a preist? Any thoughts you have might help. i just don'e remember teething to present like this!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we are still not completely ruling out teeth, as we all know children seldom graduate from high school without having gotten them, but I think for now it must be the nasty virus. She has it all-cough, green runny nose, watery eyes, and what seems to be a fierce headache. Luckily now I have it too, so I have the blessed opportunity of being able to empathize! (THANKS!) But, it is always nice to know why the little ones are so grumpy. So we will just ride it out. Thank you so much for all of your suggestions. (I personally think that it was teeth last week and virus this week. Stay tuned for next week's drama!!)

Hi H.,
There has been a nasty mystery virus going around that doesn't have a lot of symptoms sometimes. When I had it, I had one day of fever, and then a few of exhaustion and general icky feeling, a mild sore throat and itchy ear, but no cough or sinus congestion like my kids had.

For teething (and sometimes they suddenly have several appear!) homeopathic chamomilla was helpful for my kids (and helpful for me when cutting wisdom teeth at 30) where teething tablets didn't seem to do anything.

Something to remember about teething --- Babies often exhibit signs of teething well before there are any teeth broken through, or even swelling in the gums. This is actually because the most painful part of teething is when the teeth initially start to come up. So she is probably teething and in a lot of pain. At this stage orajel wont really work either because the teeth are still so far down. One other thing you might look into is an ear infection. My girls both had several ear infections and did not run a fever right away. However, being three days she would probably have a fever by now.

Good Luck!

I suggest you take her to your pediatrician. Could be something as simple as an ear infection. Also, if she's learning a new skill (crawling, walking, etc) it could be that she's not sleeping and eating to practice instead and, therefore, is grumpy because she's just not sleeping and eating like she should. If that's the case, you'll just need to deal with it for a few more days.

No exorcism needed. (But very funny.)

Hi H.,

From what you have described it really sounds like your little angel turned little possesed one (lol) is teething.

With my third baby we had a real rough go with the teething and he was slow to erupt the teeth but had symptoms for a very long before they came in. A friend of mine suggested Hyland teething tablets. These wonderful little tablets worked when nothing els seemed to. These are available in most drugstores. They are homeopathic with natural ingredients.

I hope this is helpful

My 8 month old daughter was like this this past weekend as well. She did end up with her first two teeth on Saturday. I didn't think it was teething either, until I reached in her mouth and felt ridges coming up on her lower gums. We never saw them swollen and it took about 6 days of this fussiness before they came through.

I have a friend whose 16 month old is miserable almost all the time from teething. She's been getting teeth for 5 months straight and it causes her to be extremely cranky.

So maybe it is teething?

Sounds to me like she's teething. Remember that it can take a while before the teeth present themselves and they aren't usually all that interested in eating. You could probably call her doctor, but my advice is just be patient. You're doing great!

Check to see if she has awhite residue in her mouth. She may have thrush. My little girl did the same thing until I realized that my nipples were cracky and sore as well and we went to the doctor. Both of us were prescribed an antifungal to make sure we didn't give it back and forth to each other and she's been my angel baby again ever since.

It sounds like she is teething! I am surprised she doesn't have any teeth yet. My son had 2 teeth at 5 1/2 months. Was your other daughter the same way? Have you tried a cold washcloth for her to chew on? That worked with him. I have a question for you about Celiac. I just found my birth mom (I am adopted) and she said she has Celiac and I should get tested. (as well as my son)
First question-can they test babies for this? I read you have to have gluten in your system and he hasn't had anything with gluten yet.
2nd question-are there any groups, organizations, resources for celiacs locally? Grocery stores or areas in stores that I should be shopping in if I have it? I think I might-I have had severe digestive problems my whole life.
3rd- question-do you have a Dr. you can recommend who knows about this and can educate me? I live in Aurora but I am willing to travel within reason.
Thanks so much!!

H.- I'm not sure if anyone else suggested Humphrey's Teething tablets (the only place I know to get them is at Walgreens) They help with irritablity, inflamation and wakefulness and are homeopathic. THey have really helped my daughter that started getting her teeth at 12 months and in the last 3 months she's cut 9 teeth. I was in the dental field before being a stay at home mom and I will tell you every child is different in their teething patterns. I agree with all the other mom's too when they say get out of the house at least once a day. Good lucK and be as patient as possible.

It might be teething, it can take weeks if not months for all them to come in. Try some teething gel and those teething chew things that she can hold. I like the kind that can be frozen, also try popsickles, anything that can numb the gums. It will be really fun when she teething and has a cold (or anything else). Well come to motherhood, I hope nobody promised you it would be easy.

Hello H.-

My daughter, had the same type of situation a few times. Both of teething and boredom. As I am a stay at home mother she stayed with me most of the time. Around 9monthes,(she is 18monthes now), I noticed if she didn't get out of the house for a couple hours for a day or 2 she would become very annoyed and have her "demonlike" temperment. Once I reliezed the problem we make sure to go out even if just for a car ride. Anyway just a thought:)

Hi H., I was just thinking maybe your baby is bored. Maybe taking a walk or walking at the mall if it is cold will help. With my three they seemed to get bored when we are home alot and cannot go out doors due to weather. You could also try hanging out in rooms of the house you normaly don't take the baby in. One day my 8 month old was being difficult and I went in the bathroom and we watched my two year old wash all the bath tub toys in the sink. After theat she was back to her normal sweet self.good luck A.

She could be going through a growth spurt, and cutting teeth...the teeth dont have to be noticeable yet to be bothering her. Poor thing....both of you! Good luck.

Hi H., I am sorry for what you are going through. Do you clean your house using store-bought cleaners while your baby is around? It's amazing to know what is in cleaning products, and how they can be absorbed into your baby's bloodstream by inhaling the fumes. Just something to think about. I switched to a catalog company using natural cleaning products, for the same price as what I was buying at the store, and it made a HUGE difference for my boys' asthma.
Good luck.
Sincerely,

It is that time of the year again. The wonderful cold and flu season. My son was doing the same thing last year. I took him to the doctor and they told me that he had a Croop and it was going to have to work itself out.

Is your daughter tugging on her ears at all? If she is doing that or playing with her ears you might want to think about an ear infection.

Also, is she really gassy? That might explain the discomfort.

If she is not sick then I am sure that it is her teeth. This is about the time when the teeth start moving in the gums and that is the most uncomfortable feeling in the world. Try a teething ring that has been in the freezer or a slightly wet washcloth that has been in the freezer. Let her play with that for a while and see if that helps.

I hope that I can be of some help.

EDIT: Be careful with the Orajel or any other topical ointment like that. They have the possiblity to have the adverse affect and keep the teeth from breaking through as easily as normal.
