Need Breastfeeding Support for Baby with Potential Sucking Issues

Hi, I am pregnant with my second child. The baby has been diagnosed with Asymetrical IUGR. I really want to breastfeed my baby and I'm aware that many babies with this condition are prone to having sucking issues. To complicate matters more, I had low supply issues when I breastfed my daughter.

I am trying to prepare in advance so that I can be sure to have the best chance of success. I'm having my baby at Sunrise Hospital. I have tried calling the lactation consultant there, but I am constantly given the runaround. I'm aware of the Supplemental Nutrition System (SNS) made by Medela and I'd really like to be assured one would be available to me should I need it. Since I can't get ahold of anyone who has ever heard of it at the hospital, I'm at a loss as to what step to take next. I've never dealt with a lactation consultant outside of the one that visited me in the hospital (Valley Hospital) when I had my daughter. So I'm not sure how to get ahold of one or what services they provide.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I called the Barbara Greenspun WomensCare Center and spoke with a lactation consultant their. She was very reassuring & supportive. She told me there was really not a whole lot of advance preparation I could do, but that the hospital should, if nothing else, have the equipment I will need to aid in breastfeeding & pumping at least while I'm there. She assured me that if I had any problems I could call them & send a family member to get anything I may need from them.

Hi,

You may also want to contact the Barbara Greenspun/Women's Care Center - ###-###-####, they're a division of St. Rose Hospitals. They have lactation consultants and a couple of nurses (ask for Marie!) there to answer any questions you have on breast feeding. They even have a Help Line if you run into a bind!

If you feel like getting out of the house they have a great mommies group "Feeding Frenzy", when I went last year it was on Fridays from 12-1pm. It was a lot of fun, just a roundtable group of mommies all with questions on breastfeeding!! It's nice to get out of the house & be with other moms and everyone is open to having little ones there, they taught me a lot!! Good Luck!!

M.,

Ask your doctor for a list of LCs or BabiesRUs may have a list. If you go to the Medela website www.medela.com they have a search engine for locating products and specialists in your area. If all that comes up are stores, call them and see if they have a list of LCs. Also, check and see if you have a local La Leche League rep in your area. I'm sure they'd have resources for you. The LC at Mountain View Hospital was great but that was pretty much the only part of my birth experience there that I thought was good. It is a pretty crappy hospital otherwise.

Try La Leche League, I'm sure they are online nationwide. They are hardcore believers in breastfeeding and I think they will even come to your home. They also have a hotline number. My twin boys are 4 now and I breasfed them for 13 months. I found this organization to be very helpful and supportive.

Good luck :) And good for you for wanting to do that, hang in there!

M.,

You can contact Family to Family at ###-###-####. They will help you out with breast feeding problems. They have a lactation consultant and the services are free. They are affiliated with the St. Rose Hospitals, but you didn't have to have your baby there. I had my son as Sunrise and I use their services. They are really helpful. I would contact them.

Good Luck!

You should try contacting the La Leche League...their whole reason for being is to promote and encourage breastfeeding. I'm sure they would have recommendations for you.
