Contact the family law courts. Our local family courts make free legal counsel available. In fact they have conference rooms in the basement of the courthouse for lawyers to gather to offer free or reduced cost legal counsel to people in need.
Can anyone tell me where I can get some free legal advice on a custody issue in Louisiana? I cannot afford a lawyer, but I need to
know my options and rights. Thanks!

Do a Google search for your area and find a "Pro-Bono" Attorney or a Pro-Bono Lawyers organization.

maybe these will help with at least the basics of knowing your rights.
Try google Legal Aid Society in your county or township.
