Need Ideas for 5Yr Old Bday Party at a Park/playground

My son wanted all of his classmates from preschool to attend, so with outside friends I have 20 kids (mostly a bit younger, most are 4) coming to his party. I'd be so grateful for suggestions about what would be fun that we can do on a lawn in Central Park (I got a permit). I'd love some fun relay race idea, or how to do a treasure hunt or something similar with kids who can't read yet. I got two stomp rockets (air sends foam rockets soaring) but am trying to think of how to have a structured activity around them. Thanks in advance. We can't afford an entertainer so have to make it up, which I think could be just as fun anyway...

What can I do next?

Hi S., Not only have I raised 5, and now have 3 grand kids but I worked for 12 years in a public school. Each year we had a picnic/ day of fun in Prospect Park. all children love bubbles! You can also get a colorful parachute ( I bought one through Oriental Trading catalog) Kids can hold on to the handles, circle to the left, etc. and you can do things with a rubber ball in the center. Pop it up and down, but keep it on the chute. Your local library may also have a book of ideas. Have fun and I hope you get nice weather! Best wishes Grandma Mary

I don't know when the party is, but if you subscribe to Family Fun magazine they have so many ideas for parties all the time. This month they suggested going to a store that sells refrigeraters and ask for a big box that the kids can decorate into a club house. You supply paint and brushes, markers, and let them go. You'll have to help cut out windows with a box cutter, but you can also staple shoe boxes to the window "sills" for planting flowers, bring strips of material to make curtains. Take a look online at their website.
Happy birthday!

With so many little ones, you have to keep the activities coming one right after the other. At 4 yrs old, you are going to have to make it Gymboree like. All activities will need mommy's help. You can sit them down and play hot potato with music. Pass the potato or ball from one child to the next. The one left holding the potato when the music stops is out. The remaining child will be the winner and get a prize. If you are bringing chairs to the site, you can do the same with musical chairs. You can have a prize hunt. Get little prizes at Party City or online at oriental trading, wrap them up and hide them in a particular area of the party area. You can have relay races. Have the kids hold an egg in their hands instead of on a spoon, or the spoon if you think they can handle it and make 2 or 3 teams and they have to walk or run back and forth passing the egg and the winning team gets a prize. You can get great stuff for mini prizes at orientaltrading.com. If not, you can get a 24 piece puzzle or a board game like candyland or hi ho cherrio to give as main prizes. You could also have a dance off. Play music and tell them to give you their hottest hip hop moves or break dance routines and have 2 grown ups judge the contest. This one usually gets them tired out and you can prolong it as long as you like. You can also face paint. Good luck and have a ball!!
