My mom is about to turn 65! At 60 we took her and all our kids on a cruise. Times were better then. We can't spend that kind of money right now. She is the only grandparent to my kids and my sister's kids only have her and a grandfather. She is very important to us all. We want to do something special and memorable! Just not super expensive. We've done professional pictures of all the grandkids, we are pictured out. Does anyone have any ideas? I could really use your help! THANKS!!!

So What Happened?

Thanks Everyone for your advice! My sister and I couldn't throw her a big party, but we really wanted to do something special. So tuesday night we are throwing her a small but fun Bunco birthday party! She loves playing Bunco (a dice game) and her group of friends just fell apart this summer. we are going to have her open a present every time someone gets a bunco. We are so excited! She will love it! We invited her closest friends and a few close relatives! We all bought her different presents so she has lots to open! I am giving her an MP3 player and my kids are making her a coupon book (12 coupons, one a month) to take her to a movie, dinner, a museum, etc. She just wants to spend time with her grandkids. Thanks again!

Here's a small easy thing to do in addition to anything else you decide to do. Go to a party store and buy 65 birthday cards (you can buy a box of birthday cards for something like $5, I think you get 20 cards in a box). Then give 65 friends/family/acquaintances/friends of friends, etc each a card and provide them with a stamp and you Mom's address. After they address and sign them they give them back to you and you mail them in time to arrive on her birthday!
Another idea... you can give her 65 $1 scratch off lottery tickets.

I think a party - even something simple and pot-luck at someone's house - with her friends and family would be lovely.

For a present, I think it really depends on the person and the family. For my grandmother, we put together a book of poetry she had written over the years along with excerpts of old letters and letters to her that we asked family members to send. (A lot of work, though. Don't do that at the last minute.)

One year for my mother-in-law, who asked for no more stuff, her 6 kids gave her a gift of a year of chores. Each kid signed up for two months and gave her a Saturday of labor - yard work or whatever. Personally I hated that since we live 300 miles away, so it was the most inconvenient gift ever, but if you live closer it was a nice idea.

Does she have old slides or 8mm tapes that need to be converted to DVD? That would be an idea. Or if she's not the sentimental type, maybe a day at the spa with her daughters?

What about a nice dinner with all her friends and family? Maybe a surprise party?

My mom is turning 60 in December and in addition to a reception, my siblings & I have contacted all the invitees and asked them to send us pictures along with a story. We're going to compile all of it on to a dvd for my mom.

Best of luck!

We just celebrated my mom's 75th by having a surprise dinner for her at a nice restaurant downtown, inviting our immediate family and her close friends.
I have 2 other sisters and we also enjoy having a 'girls night out' with our mom which usually includes a dinner and a musical/play - this is something my mom really enjoys.

Hi...for my in-laws' anniversary, we chartered a boat on Lake Michigan where we simply had a nice afternoon cruise and drinks/appetizers. It was just our family, my husband's siblings and families, and a few friends and neighbors. I think we boarded at a dock right before Soldier Field. It wasn't the Spirit or Oddysey (nothing THAT big) but it was big enough to be special. This past summer we all took a luncheon cruise on the Oddysey...that was pretty awesome in itself if you haven't done that before. The kids had a blast as well. I know the lunch cruises are cheaper than the dinner cruises. The boat cruises along the shoreline, not straight out into the lake. Just some thoughts!

Does she have a lot of pictures that are not organized? My friends daughter made her dad an album of pictures of him as he grew up and made comments in the book(Look at that hair!!) things like that. Another idea would be Does she have any special interests? Tie that in if you can. If she like to scrapbook or go to movies make the gift match. Even if you do not spend a lot she will know you put some work into it since you made the effort to pay attention to her interests. Does she like to cook? Maybe some cooking lessons. There is a company called Dinner by Design. You could go and cook her a weeks worth of meals that she can freeze. They supply the ingredients and do the cleaning up afterwards.
How about tracking down an old friend for her. Haven't we all had someone that we regret losing touch with?
I was at a wedding last weekend where they made a dvd of a slide show of pictures of the bride and groom as they grew up then as they were together. Something like that with the grandkids pictures that she can see how they have grown. Is there someone she would like to go see in concert? Maybe take her to concert and to a nice dinner.

If you have the time take a video camera and go around to as many people as you can and have them wish her a happy birthday and tell a little nice or funny story or just their favorite memory of her. You can then take this somewhere and have them make it into a DVD. We did this for my Aunt and it was awsome then we showed it at a party we had for her and everyone got a copy of it too.
