New Big Brother Presents?

A friend just had her second son today--two weeks early. I was thinking of getting the 4-year-old a big brother present. We don't know them super well but our kids are the same age and we talk every once in awhile when we happen to be outside at the same time. Our kids were supposed to have their first playdate tomorrow, actually (which obviously is postponed for now!) Any ideas for what to get? Not sure if they have done all of the "I'm going to be a big brother" type books or not....thanks for any ideas!

When my daughter became a big sister, I always appreciated when she also got a present. It didn't really matter what it was. It didn't need to say "I'm a big sister" on it. She did get one shirt that stated "I'm a big sister", which she loved. However, it was really the thought that counted. She loved getting something and it made her feel special when her baby sister got presents. I typically give the older child a book, such as Dr. Suess or by another children's author.

It is very sweet and thoughtful of you to think about the older son!

If he's like most 4 year olds, he's into jumping around like a super hero. How about a cape that says SUPER BRO!?

We had our second almost 6 months ago and things people did for my older son that were really appreciated were: a gift card for Toys R Us, a couple different big brother books, a 'Big Bro' t-shirt and lots of play dates. His getting individual attention was so important (and still is) and seeing his friends w/o Mommy was key. And I loved, loved, loved when people cooked for us.

Hope this helps...

take care,
J.

Good Morning C.: It is 2 am here in Calif.. Right now the mom needs a playdate for her older child more than ever. The little one needs so much and the older one needs to have some special time.
I usually give a fun movie to entertain the child & its usually an educational one or we have found one called Robots that is a cute animation that teaches great friendship lessons. Puzzels or color book, anything that shows he is not forgotten in the excitement of the new little one. I bought one little girl a Tshirt that said I am the BEST BIG SISTER. Just keep it simple it is the thought that will mean so very much.
If you can do it think about taking her a meal I bet that would be appreciated by everyone! You are very kind to even think about doing this.Take Care, Nana G

C., you've gotten some terrific suggestions already. I always give the older child a book (actually, not the big brother/sister type), because that insures that the child will get some special time while mom/dad reads to him/her, especially at bedtime. Maybe something like "Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel"???

Take care, E.

I usually give a toy like legoes or k'nex to a boy of this age with a little talk about how the new baby cannot play with this toy and they really need to be careful to pick things up.

Having raised 2 children and having a daycare for for 4 years for preschool children, I suggest something appropriate for his personality; something he would totally enjoy having/using/playing with. At this time, though an older child may be excited about his new role, it's nice to recognize them for who they are, not the new role they are taking on. D. Krauss

Andrea Zimmerman's picture book "Digger Man" is a cute big bro gift if the 4YO likes trucks and construction equipment - the boy in the story talks about all the work he would do as a digger truck operator and that his baby brother is too little now but he'll teach him to be a digger man when he's older. http://www.amazon.com/Digger-Man-Andrea-Zimmerman/dp/0805...
