My son is 2 weeks and 4 days old. He did have a BM (bowel movement) almost every changing the first week. Now he is only have about one in a 24 hour period. He does also at times seem very uncomfortable and is bringing his knees up to his stomach. Should I be concerned and call the doctor?? I think he may be backed up. He is bottle fed with half breast milk and half formula.

What can I do next?

This sounds like a normal transition of BMs. For formula fed babies once a day is common, for breast fed babies it ranges from many small ones in a day to once every few days. It is normal for babies to strain a bit when passing a BM. He is only constipated if the stools are hard and dry. If they are soft when he gets them out he is fine. The more breast milk you are able to give the less likely he is to have problems with constipation.

ETA: I disagree with with a previous poster about needing to choose one or the other (breastmilk or formula), give all the breastmilk you can and if needed supplement with rest with formula. Giving half and half is fine, any amount of breastmilk is beneficial for the baby.

they say babies can go 10 days with out one. Think that is a bit extreme. most likely gas. I would do some leg pumps (bicycles) and lower tummy massage. Its the formula... it always back em up might have been in a tired moment you got a bit more formula than water mix once or twice. Give him some gas drops or gripe water, but not likely needing a visit to a doctor. That just exposes them to so many viruses and junk for no reason.

I remember have the same concern. We were constantly changing poopy diapers and then one day there was only one. Kind of freaked me out!

That is a normal part of their development. (I just can't remember when they started only have one or two a day.) Their systems adjust, and they just don't poop as much.

I really wouldn't worry about him bringing his knees to his chest. He was in that position for 9 months, and he's just comfortable with it. Our younger son preferred sleeping in his carseat or in the swing, and our ped said that was fine and perfectly normal, as those favored that curved position and helped him to feel snuggled and safe.

I think it is great that you're asking questions here. I hope you find it helpful. Please don't hesitate to call your doctor if you really are concerned. They really do know how scary it is to bring home and newborn, and they are there to help!

I would not assume that because he is bringing his knees up that he is backed up...to me that means you need to burp him more. Be patient, burping can take along time but it is VERY IMPORTANT that you get it done!

Don't stress on the poop...he sounds fine!

See if you can just give him breastmilk. Some babies have a hard time digesting formula but eventually they get the hang of it. You may have to feed more often depending on your supply but he should be ok. And one poop in 24 hrs is fine. Their gastrointestinal systems are just booting up so don't stress!

You are stressing yourself out here. Take a deep breath. His bowel movements will change over time. I don't think he is backed up. If he is going to be exclusively breast fed, then his BMs will be mustard yellow for the first month. Formula? they will stink to high heaven and be a lighter color.

If he brings his knees to his stomach it's because of gas. It is most likely because his little system is confused between formula and breast milk. You can burp him or lay him on his back and "cycle" his legs...burp him as well.

I know the first months are tough. You worry about EVERYTHING. Am I feeding him enough? Am I changing his diaper enough? Am I doing it right?! It's okay - take a deep breath. You are fine mama. Pick one or the other with the breast feeding or formula. I am STRONGLY for breast feeding. But if you can't do it - it's OKAY to formula feed.

BM's can be very irregular at this age. I wouldn't worry yet. If you have just recently introduced formula in the last day or two, it could be a factor, but should work itself out very quickly. My eldest was strictly fed formula and once we brought her home from the hospital, she didn't have a BM for three days. The pediatrician told us to put a bit of karo syrup in her bottles and it did the trick. But really, 24 hours isn't bad. It may be just gas. Lay him on his tummy for a few minutes (with you right next to him the whole time, of course) and rub his back, pat his bottom, or bicycle his legs, or try gas drops. If he doesn't go within another day or so, call his doctor and see what they recommend.
