Hi,
My newborn was up quite a lot last night and therefore I was too. I noticed that when she starts to fall asleep, she seems to breathe more rapidly and then there are even pauses in her breathe. She winced a lot in her sleep last night and makes an almost crying face as well so she may uncomfortable. The strange breathing is freaking me out! Why the pauses??
Thank you

What can I do next?

An irregular breathing pattern is normal for newborns. It is normal for babies to pause when they breathe, especially as newborns and young infants. As long as she doesn't pause for more than 15-20sec and her color looks good (pink) there is usually no cause for concern. I am a pediatric nurse and mom of a 3yr old and 26wks pregnant with my second. I COMPLETELY understand the fear of the way they breathe. At work the kids are on monitors (ICU) so we know if something is wrong - we of course don't have that at home, but given my career I was always scared that something would happen and I wouldn't know (like SIDS). Alot of us at work joke about wanting a monitor for our new babies (or kids when they were babies) to give us peace of mind :)
If you are really concerned, speak with your pediatrician about this. But like I said, as long as the pauses aren't lasting more than 15-20sec and her color remains the same, she should be fine.
Good luck and congrats on your new baby girl!

You got some great info from Steph D. I just wanted to add.. My son did the rapid breathing thing too. Babies make all kinds of faces when they sleep. My son is 4 weeks old now, he smiles in his sleep, pouts, winces, frowns, scowls.. he's done that from the first week. Something I did was skin to skin cuddling - baby in a diaper on my bare chest (usually under my electric blanket to stay snuggly warm! Babies will match your breathing, plus snuggling like that is just amazing. I co-sleep, but if that's not your thing maybe some mid-afternoon snuggling? :)

My baby did that too, our doctor said its normal. But you can always ask your pediatrician if it really worries you. I think the faces that shes making is just from a dream.
