Nighttime Bottle - How Much Is to Much?

Hello! My little angel is 14 months now and is about 22lbs. She has been drinking 8 - 10 oz at night time for several months. My question to you is, how long should we give her this much milk at night and when should we try to substitute with more food at dinner? She's a bit of a picky eater (no surprise, so's her mother) and prefers to feed the dog. Should we start to give her milk with dinner to slowly reduce the night time bottle? Or is it ok for her to continue to drink this much milk at night?

I think now would be a great time to start giving her more food at dinner and cutting down her bedtime bottle/sippy cup. My daughter is 13 months and doesn't take a bedtime bottle or sippy at all anymore. We still offer her a sippy of formula, usually 4 ounces, right before bed, but she almost always just takes one sip and throws it on the floor. She does eat all adult food now, 3 meals a day and a snack in the afternoon. She eats dinner at 5pm and is in bed for the night by 6pm, usually sleeps through the night (12 hours) and then has breakfast around 6:30am. My son continued to take 4-6 ounces before bed until around 16 months, but he tended to eat less at dinner.

I have a picky 14 month old too, and it's a pain! :) I would give milk at dinner, but not for a couple of hours before that. (Only water.) Then see what you can get her to eat at dinner. Then give, at most, 2-3 oz of milk before bed. But you can leave a sippy cup of water in her crib, in case she gets thirsty.

When I started giving milk primarily at meals, my son started eating a lot more! I do still give a little bit in the morning and at night, but I limit that to just a couple of ounces.

I think that you probably do need to start cutting that amount down at night but also you should start transitioning her to getting all of her milk (and other liquids) in a cup rather than a bottle.

Once you start cutting back the milk at night she will probably actually eat better for you during the day and may not be as picky. I know that when we started transitioning our son from bottles (he is now 14 months) to cups he actually ate better because naturally he does not drink as much from a cup as he did from the bottle - which is kind of the point. There nutrition is transitioning from liquids to solids.

What is she drinking with dinner if not her milk? At a year old, their milk becomes secondary to their food, and milk becomes a beverage that they drink with meals. At 14 months, she doesn't need bottle feedings anymore, a couple of ounces in a cup before bedtime if she is thirsty or needs a "snack," but a full bottle feeding really isn't needed. I'd do a cup with dinner and then a few ounces before bedtime.

Hi A.,
do you give anything else to your daughter prior to the bottle? My son is around 13 months and this is normally what happens. After his daycare his home around 5:30 where he drinks about 4-6 oz of milk depending on how hungry he is. Than he will eat diner with us around 6-7pm or will give him one of his food. Than after a bath, he will normally go to bed around 8-9pm where I will give him a bottle 8oz the most but he will only drink 3-4oz pf it because his not hungry. This started when he started eating solids ( more of adult foods). Does she eat adult foods at all? My son loves noodles and will eat mashed potatos / boiled carrots / rice...ect...
Good Luck!
