"Santa" is considering bringing my 6 year old son a Nintendo DS for Christmas. I have noticed that there is a Nintendo DS, a DSi, and a DSLite. Can anyone give me advice on what your child has and whether or not you like the choice you made? Thank you.

What can I do next?

The DS Light is the basic version that most stores sell. The DSi is a larger screen, has a camera built in (can do really fun stuff with the pics) and I believe has WiFi so you can connect with the internet. One of mine has the DS and the other the DSi. If I were buying I would choose the DSi as I think it would last longer. I think you can disable the WiFi connection so that's not available to them.

Yes..Nintendo DS, my six year old daughter has a DSi and she loves it but hers does not have the camera in it and she now wants that one, so I would suggest you get the DS with the camera in it and then you will not have your child wanting another one. Good luck

if you're venturing into the gaming world, then you want to purchase the newest options available. Anything else is a waste of time. Technology is "old" as soon as it's released.

This comes from 20 years of buying electronics for our sons!

My 7 year old just saved his own money and bought the dsi xl. The dsi has a built in camera and is capable of downloading additional games from the nintendo site where the ds cannot do these additional things. If your son would not use the camera and you would not allow him to download games save yourself a bit of money and get him the ds. They come available in packages that include a game and often some sort of accessory that would be a great value for Christmas. Good luck!

My son has a DS and I have a DSi - the DSi has a clearer, larger screen but only one game card slot. The DS has two game card slots and can play two different size cartridges. I prefer the DSi for ease of play.

The DSi has a built in camera and you can draw on the photos you take - kinda' fun for a 6 year old. Since it has WiFi capabilities you can also downlowd some free games and add ons. Also, as Sue H. said the DSi is newer technology.

I vote for the DSi. -

Oh, don't forget to check Game Stop for a used machine and games. Since this is his first one know that he will be wanting an updated model in a couple of years!!!! Santa brought my son his first GameBoy when he was that age and we have know been through 4 upgrades to newer versions.

Merry Christmas!!!!

We have two Nintendo DS's... one for me or my husband, the other for our 6 year old son. I went with the DS because it is backwards compatible with Gameboy Advanced games - which means being able to buy used games and access to more games.

I like the DS. I had previously purchased the Leapfrog handheld systems and he was getting too old for the ones around at the time. I buy a mix of games, including Reader Rabbit and other educational games I can find. I limit his playtime, just my personal choice. He has to ask me if he can play it and its not a daily thing. He really likes it - definitely a hit. He got his when he was 5 and a half and he hasn't had any problem understanding the games and playing it. I suggest investing in a pair of headphones for it too.

Well, my husband is a bit of a video gaming nerd so I hear stuff all the time about all the video gaming systems and the options available. There really isn't much more to tell that the other moms haven't already stated. The DS was the first in the DS handhelds. It is bigger and klunkier, but also tougher. The DS lite is smaller and the screens are brighter (you can't tell though unless you go from playing the DS to one of the upgrades.) The DS and the DS lite will both play Nintendo DS games as well as Gameboy Advance games. The DSi is the newest one. It is the same size as the DS lite, but I think my husband said the screens are bigger.

We have the DS and two DS lites. I prefer the DS lite just because it is smaller and takes up less space. They do have a history of the hinges breaking though. My husband's has boken on one side (it does still work), and my brothers' also has, and my husband has read several articles.

Well, my MIL got my daughter, when 7 years old, the DS lite.
She likes it. That seems to be a popular one. For adults too.

If you go to: www.gamestop.com you can see it and all the games (which are rated) for kids

We have a DS and a DSi XL which is a DSi with a larger screen. My boys way prefer the DSi XL because it does way more. It had a camera that allows them to distort the pictures, and they play with that all the time. I would go with the DSi.
