My son is getting a Nintendo DS. He is 5 years old. Does anyone have suggestions of what game we should start with? Thanks!

What can I do next?

My daughter got one for Christmas and although she now has 5 games she almost always plays Mario Kart. Her older brother plays it with her as well.

NONE! Those small games will destroy kids eyes over a period of time. If you are certain you want him to have one, be prepared to purchase him glasses in the near future. I would also recommend your son not receiving one until he is 2/3rd grade (showing you that he can handle the responsibility of school work, homework & video game life & balance it all). Five years old is a little too early, but that is just my opinion.

There's lots of little animal simulation games, like Dogz and Catz and Hamsterz lol and there's a veterinarian game, but that might be a little over his head. We like Animal Crossing, you just run around and talk to people and fish and catch bugs. We play that ourselves, our little guy's not able to play yet!

There's also Cooking Mama, maybe that would be something you could do together.

You might also want to check Craigslist.org, lots of folks sell video games for relatively cheap!

We have a DS, and both my 5 yr old & 3 yr old play it. They like "Mario Kart", "Strawberry Shortcake", and some others. I would just say make sure to read over the game carefully...just because it says "E", it may still be to hard for little kids. Your best bet, would almost be anything "Mario"...they are very kid friendly games.

You can try Mater National based on the movie Cars, or any Lego Star Wars if he likes Star Wars. My 8 yr old loves those games.

my four yr old loves mario kart and a race car game we found. They also have a cute Lightening McQueen game for kiddos, if he's into that one. Also, spongebob, and a couple other popular games, I think they even have Diego...??? Good luck!

I would start with the New Super Mario Bros. It is easy to figure out and fun.

I will tell you though, my seven year old got one in December and can't seem to put it down. We have had to limit his time everyday.

My son was 5yo when he received his DS. He loves Kirby. Kirby is pink but not at all feminine- he fights, etc. He also loves the Super Mario games. Have fun...

Sorry if this posts twice...the website is acting goofy. Anyway, I asked my 6 year old son, who looooves his DS and his response was..."any kid would really like the New Super Mario Brothers game." So there you have it! Expert advise! lol Good luck! :)

My son is 6 and got his nintendo from Santa. He love Speed Racer and I also believe that they have the cars DS game too. He also loves Hot Wheels Beat That...the race course is almost like a race track set up in the bedroom or in different rooms of the house, it's pretty cool.

How about Nintendogs? The little puppies on there are so sweet and it really is a good way to show a child that age what's involved in caring for a pet. It's good fun that you and he could have together. I couldn't put them down when my kids first got them.

My son got his Nintendo DS when he was in Kindergarten and he loves the Pokemon games. He like Super Mario too. Pokemon was fun for him but there was a lot of reading to do with it and it frustrated him because in Kindergarten he wasn't a very good reader so he would have to stop playing the game and ask me or my husband to read what it was saying to him. Take that into consideration. He's in 3rd grade now and seems to be fine with those games and reading. Good luck.
