My baby girl is a month old. She goes days without pooping. She is on Goodstart formula. It currently has been 4 days since she has had a bowel movement. Has anyone else had thid problem? Is it "normal"?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all of your help. She actually pooped today. Although it was a horrible shade of green and very thick, it was something. Needless to say, she went right in the tub!!

Hi L.,

All three of my kids have gone through this, the worst being 11 days of no poop! With that one we were told to give an enema (she was 1). Since then we either do prune juice or mineral oil to keep things going ok. Mine all held it in which only made it worse & then got scared to push! Horrible cycle because then it would hurt so hold it in which made it hurt, etc...... Now my son needs his "poop medicine" maybe 2x a month. Plus I need to remind him to poop, I will say by tomorrow night or something like that to promote his pooping, no pressure! If all else fails, ask the dr.

Hope this helps
C.

My daughter was the same way as an infant. Our pediatrian said it was completely normal. She did tell me I could try a few things. Put a couple of teaspoons of Karo syrup in every bottle and it should loosen things up. If that didn't work then she told me to try digiital stimulation, she recommended using a rectal thermometer. The rectal thermometer worked the best for my daughter. I only had to insert the tip (very carefully of course and with A LOT of petroleum jelly on the tip). I only had to do it a few times and then things were fine.

Completely normal. My eldest daughter (now 5) did that at about 3 weeks, and she was exclusively breastfed! Very unusual for breastfed babies, but well within "normal". I believe it was referred to as "fecal hording". Lovely. My baby daughter (born on 7/4/07) is seeming to follow a similar pattern. Maybe it's a girl thing. My sons did not do this. Just prepare yourself for a blowout!!

This can be very normal. To know if she is constipated or just an infrequent pooper is determined by the conisitency of her BMs when she has them. Are they formed but soft? Or small, hard "rabbit turds" (sorry if that is kinda crude, but definitely an accurate description of constipation). It is normal to hear babies grunt and appear to "struggle" to pass their stools, but as long as what comes out is soft then she is not constipated and does not need interventions. If she is constipated I hear the Karo syurp mention in the PP works well, or you could ask your ped for advice.

My first son did the same thing, the doctor put him on low iron formula. He said that babies store iron from in the womb for up to 3 months. So we had him on Similac low iron until he was about 3 -3 1/2 months old. Hope this helps.
